The Lord knows the way that you take; He has counted the miles before you, and not one step shall you tread outside His watchful eye. It is a good habit to commit your journey to the Most High, for He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The way may be infested with evil men, but their breath is in His hand, and He can chain their malice as easily as He calmed the sea. Underneath you are the everlasting arms, and though you ride through the midst of perils, you ride beneath the shadow of the Almighty. His feathers shall cover you; His faithfulness is your shield and rampart. The dry tree may flourish by His grace, and the green tree wither without it, so your safety hangs not upon the smoothness of the road, but upon the presence of your God.
Yet do not imagine that the journey shall be without testing, for the Lord often proves His pilgrims in the furnace of tribulation. Trial is not a sign of His absence, but the schoolroom of His love. The time of your travel is appointed, and the measure of grace is already prepared, exactly fitted to the hour of need. When the enemy presses in, remember that the Lord goes before you; He thrusts out the foe, and He also commands you to be strong and of good courage. Divine Sovereignty is no gloomy doctrine, it is the soft pillow on which the believer rests. If He has ordained the journey, He will guide you in it, and no kidnapper, no hidden danger, no sudden calamity can pluck you from His hand unless He permits it for your ultimate good.
But there is a special favor you must seek, not the common mercy that falls like rain upon the just and the unjust, but the peculiar love that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The sweet savor of His righteousness makes your person accepted before the Father. Approach every mile of this travel as one who is not your own, but bought with a price. Let your conduct be a fragrance of Christ, avoid every appearance of evil, and let haste and obstinacy be far from you. Divine Wisdom, clothed in tender love, calls you to lean upon her. If you will submit your will to His, bowing in all things to His command, you shall find that the path which seemed trackless becomes a highway of holiness.
So go forth with quiet confidence. The God who set the stars in their courses holds your breath in His keeping. At the end of the way you shall look back and see that mercy camped about you every night, and that the angel of the covenant led you all the day. Safe, safe, safe, near to your God and blessed forevermore. The end of this journey is certain, for He who called you will bring you to your desired haven, and there you shall recount the faithfulness of Him who kept you from falling.
