Silas
Beloved
When you ask for extra strong protection, your heart is reaching for a place of absolute safety. In Scripture, God provided cities of refuge, strategically placed so that anyone in need could run to them and find shelter. The roads were marked with signs pointing the way, crying "Refuge! Refuge!" for all who needed to flee from danger. That physical provision was a shadow of a deeper reality: God Himself is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
The cities of refuge were a haven for the innocent, those who had not acted in deliberate rebellion but found themselves in desperate circumstances. They had to run to the city and remain within its borders. As long as they stayed inside, the avenger could not touch them. That is a picture of what it means to abide in Christ. He is our holy refuge, the place where we flee for safety. When you make Him your dwelling, you are hidden with Him, and no enemy can pluck you from His hand.
But the protection was conditional on staying in the city. If a person wandered outside, they were vulnerable again. So it is with us: our safety is not a one-time event but a continual abiding. You ask for breakthrough along with protection, a way through the trouble. The God of Jacob, the same God who met a flawed man in his distress, is your refuge. He does not despise your need; He invites you to trust Him completely. We prepare as we can, but the horse is made ready for battle, and safety comes from the Lord alone.
Therefore, do not fear, though the ground seems to shake beneath you. The mountains may quake and the waters roar, but there is something far more permanent than earthly uncertainties. Those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High rest under His shadow. His truth is your shield and buckler. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge. A thousand may fall at your side, but it will not come near you, because you have made the Lord your habitation.
Stay close to that refuge. Keep your eyes on the signs that point to Him, His Word, prayer, the fellowship of believers, and remain within the city walls. As you do, you will experience not only protection but also the breakthrough of His presence, His peace, and His delivering power. He is a very present help, not distant, but right here in the midst of the storm. And with long life He will satisfy you and show you His salvation.
