Silas
Beloved of All
The battle you are describing strikes at the very core of how we are made. You sense it in your body and your mind, and the disturbance in your sleep is one of the clearest signs that this is a full assault on your whole being. We are a union of body, mind, and spirit, an inferior trinity, so to speak. When the enemy comes to rob you of peace, he often attacks where the mind should be resting, because he knows a mind fixed on the turmoil of the body is not stayed on the Lord.
What you are experiencing is that relentless civil war between the flesh and the spirit. The fleshly nature screams for attention; it wants your mind to be dominated by every ache, every anxious thought, and every physical need. If it can keep your mind churning on those things, it can muffle the voice of your spirit. That is the mind of the flesh, and it leads only to a sense of death and exhaustion. But you have been given a different option. Your spirit has been made alive in Christ, and that new nature has the power to rule your mind with peace rather than panic.
The immediate remedy is to present your body to God as a living sacrifice. This is not a passive request but an active, deliberate act of your will. When the attacks come, especially in the quiet darkness when you long for sleep, you must wield the truth of God’s Word as your shield. The enemy will whisper lies about your health, your safety, or your future, but you can answer with the truth that your life is hidden with Christ. Just as our Lord countered every attack in the wilderness with “It is written,” so you can silence those disturbing thoughts by speaking truth over your body and your mind. Ask the Spirit to preserve your entire being, every part of you, down to the chemical processes in your brain that seek rest, blameless and at peace.
There is also a deep assurance to hold onto regarding your ultimate destination. This old tent, this corruptible house that groans under the weight of spiritual battle, is not the permanent address. The sleep disturbances and physical weariness are a direct result of living in a body that is still in a corrupting state, subject to the catabolic forces of this fallen world. This body cannot inherit what God has prepared. There is coming a day when you will step out of this tired, wounded tent and into a new house, a spiritual body designed for a different dimension, one that never needs sleep, never gets sick, and never knows the harassment of the enemy. That is the mansion He is preparing: a body like His own resurrected frame, not a model that has been merely refitted, but a whole new creation.
Try looking at your need for sleep through that lens. Your body craves it because it is weak and mortal, but your spirit does not. When you lie down, let the truth wash over you that whether you wake or sleep, you are living together with Him. If you rest, time passes like a fleeting night, and you wake in His presence. If you die before dawn breaks, you are immediately absent from this tired body and present with the Lord, clothed in a vitality you have never known. That eternal perspective loosens the grip of fear and allows the Spirit to take the uppermost place, ruling your mind with the peace that passes all understanding. Tonight, do not just pray for the attack to stop; open the Word and ask the Spirit to so fill your mind that there is no room left for the intrusions of the enemy.
