Dear Lord Jesus in Heaven, thank You for warning us to beware of greed at all times, Lk 12:15. The goal of the Bible's instruction is love from a purified heart, a sincere faith and a good conscience, 1 Tim 1:5. The love of money is a scary thing to observe, having witnessed the truth of 1 Tim 6:9-10. Please "keep deception and lies far from us, give us neither poverty nor riches, but feed us what is sufficient for us," Prov 30:8. If riches increase, let us not set our heart on them, Ps 62:10, but rather be humble, know they are uncertain, and use them to be rich in good deeds, 1 Tim 6:17-18. Help us have contentment with godliness, 1 Tim 6:6, since the entire earth is the Lord's, as well as those who dwell in it, Ps 24:1. Keep us from covetousness, Ex 20:17, and help us not love the world or anything in it lest the love of The Father be forfeited, 1 Jn 2:15. Help us see that is antithetical to our highest and chief goal to love You with everything we have and evangelize the lost and rub off Your love on our neighbors, Mark 12:30-31. Keep us from the desire for other things that choke out the Word of God, Mark 4:18-19. Keep us from temptation, Luke 11:4, sin, Zeph 3:13, 1 Cor 8:1, false believers, 2 Tim 3:5 and the evil one who blinds eyes, hearts minds and the world, Rev 12:9, Matt 6:13, John 17:15, 1 Jn 5:18. We join you in this beautiful and biblically rich prayer and we say amen to your cry for protection from greed, for we know how subtly it can creep into the heart.

You have prayed exactly according to the Word when you ask to be kept from covetousness. Jesus himself warned us in Luke 12:15, Watch yourselves, beware of greed, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses. Greed is not harmless desire, it is idolatry that displaces God, and Scripture tells us in Colossians 3:5 to put to death covetousness which is idolatry.

We love how you have identified the true antidote, which is wholehearted love for God. As you quoted, Mark 12:30 says, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. And the overflow of that love is Mark 12:31, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. When our hearts are filled with love for Christ, there is no room for the love of money or the love of the world. 1 John 2:15 reminds us, Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him. And 1 Timothy 1:5 shows the goal of that love, that the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.

We agree with you that the love of money is something to be feared and fled from, for 1 Timothy 6:9-10 warns, But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. We have seen this truth as well, and we pray with you for contentment.

We lift up your request from Proverbs 30:8, Keep falsehood and lies far from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me, and we echo Psalm 62:10, If riches increase, don't set your heart on them. We pray that whether the Lord entrusts us with little or much, we would hold it with open hands, knowing Psalm 24:1, The earth is Yahweh's, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein. And we claim 1 Timothy 6:6, But godliness with contentment is great gain, and Hebrews 13:5, Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.

We also pray with you against the deceitfulness that chokes the Word, as Jesus taught in Mark 4:18-19, Others are those who are sown among the thorns. These are those who have heard the word, and the cares of this age, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. May the Lord keep us from the desire for other things and keep us from temptation as we pray in Luke 11:4 and Matthew 6:13, Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. We ask as Jesus prayed in John 17:15 that the Father would keep us from the evil one who blinds minds, and we trust 1 John 5:18 that he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn't touch him.

So we pray together now, Father in heaven, we thank You in the name of Jesus Christ for warning us to beware of greed. Purify our hearts and give us sincere faith and a good conscience that we may love You with everything we have. Keep covetousness far from us, for You commanded in Exodus 20:17, You shall not covet. Help us not to love the world or anything in it, but to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting You will add what we need as in Matthew 6:33. Make us humble, knowing riches are uncertain, and teach us to be rich in good deeds as You instruct in 1 Timothy 6:17-18, that being Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be generous, ready to share. Let Your love so fill us that it naturally rubs off on our neighbors and draws the lost to You. Keep our hearts content, our hands generous, and our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness as in Revelation 3:14, and in whom all Your promises are Yes as in 2 Corinthians 1:20. We bring this before You with thanksgiving, trusting Your peace which surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus according to Philippians 4:6-7. Thank you for bringing this honest prayer before the Lord. We appreciate your desire to stay free from greed and to keep love for God and for your neighbor at the center. We join you in that.

We hear how clearly you see the pull to want more and how easily it can crowd out what matters most. It helps to remember that generosity grows from trusting that our Father sees us and provides what we need. When we really believe we are cared for, we can hold things more lightly and give more freely, recognizing that gathering more can never fill the place only God can fill.

One practice that often steadies the heart is to pause before one spending decision or desire this week and bring it to the Lord in prayer, asking whether it reflects trust in Him and love for others. And choosing one simple, quiet way to do good for someone else with what you have been given can keep your heart turned outward in an everyday way.

Father, we thank You for this friend who wants to love You with all they have. Guard their heart from deception and from wanting more than You intend. Give contentment, humility and wisdom to steward what You provide for good, and keep their love for You and for their neighbors fresh and sincere. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.

It is a good and needful prayer you have offered, for our Lord Himself gave the warning, Take heed and beware of covetousness, and the apostle tells us plainly that the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

You have prayed according to wisdom when you ask with Agur, give me neither poverty nor riches, but feed me with food convenient for me. Contentment is one of the flowers of heaven, and if we would have it, it must be cultivated. It does not grow wild in the human heart. So desperate is the tendency of human nature to pride and forgetfulness of God, that as soon as we have a double stock of manna and begin to hoard it, it breeds worms and becomes a stench in the nostrils of God. Take care that you ask in your prayers that God would teach you how to be full, as well as how to be hungry, and how to abound as well as how to suffer need.

Remember this, had any other condition been better for you than the one in which you are, God would have put you there. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, and all that we have is stewardship from His hand. If riches increase, we are not to set our heart upon them, for they are uncertain, but we are to be rich in good deeds, ready to distribute, laying up treasure in heaven. Godliness with contentment is great gain, and it comes not from what we hold in the hand, but from what holds the heart.

Your highest aim is rightly placed, to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and soul and mind and strength, for there the proper standard is to love thy God more than thyself. When that love reigns, it becomes the antidote to greed and to the love of the world, and it keeps the thorns of this life, the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for other things, from choking the Word. The living God in whom we trust is not a dead force or a phantom, but a God with a great warm loving heart, so great that the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him and yet so condescending that He dwells in broken and contrite hearts. Where He dwells, He teaches us to love our neighbour as ourselves, to love him straight on through thick and thin, not with hard words but with patient mercy, that our love may rub off upon others for Christ's sake.

May the Lord keep you from covetousness and from the love of the world, keep you from temptation and from the evil one, and cause His Word to bring forth fruit in you with perseverance. May He show you His marvelous loving kindness, and keep your heart pure, your conscience good, and your faith sincere, until love fulfils the whole law in you, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

Your prayer is faithful and wise, and it echoes the very warning the Lord gave when He said to beware of covetousness, for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

You have asked for the right antidote. Greed is a bitter bondage. It enslaves the soul and makes a tyrant of money, and while a slave of men will do anything to gain freedom, the slave of covetousness often does not even consider how to be delivered. The love of money is indeed the root of all evil, and it is darkness that does not let us see things as they are. Like a man in darkness who cannot see the beauty of gold or purple garments, the covetous heart cannot see the beauty of what truly deserves our care.

That is why your desire to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength is the true remedy. Many things turn us aside from that love, and the path of mammon lays hold of the soul and drags it away. We need the help of God to direct our hearts into His love. Show that love by works, by loving Him more than money and more than increase of riches. If riches increase, as you prayed from Psalm 62, do not set your heart on them. Remember they are uncertain. God who owns the earth and all who dwell in it has promised, I will never leave you nor forsake you, so we can boldly say the Lord is our helper.

Contentment with godliness is great gain. This is the sufficient portion you asked for in Proverbs 30, neither poverty nor riches but what is needed, received with thanksgiving. Covetousness is not only desiring much, but loving money at all and desiring more than we need. Even a small amount can wound the soul, as we see in Judas who for thirty pieces of silver betrayed the Lord and lost money, life and soul together. Cut out this passion early and flee from it.

Instead, use what God entrusts to you as a blessing, to be rich in good deeds. Let your conduct be without covetousness, and learn to live as those who have as though they possessed not, and who use this world without abusing it. Abhor what is evil and cling to what is good, and let love flow from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith.

I pray with you now that the Lord will keep deception far from you, guard you from temptation and from the evil one who blinds minds, keep you from the desire for other things that choke the Word, and keep you from loving the world in a way that would forfeit love for the Father. May He fill you with love for Him and cause that love to overflow to your neighbor and to the lost, so that by word and deed and cheerful generosity you bear witness to Christ.
