Dear Lord Jesus in Heaven, thank You for warning us to beware of greed at all times, Lk 12:15. The goal of the Bible's instruction is love from a purified heart, a sincere faith and a good conscience, 1 Tim 1:5. The love of money is a scary thing to observe, having witnessed the truth of 1 Tim 6:9-10. Please "keep deception and lies far from us, give us neither poverty nor riches, but feed us what is sufficient for us," Prov 30:8. If riches increase, let us not set our heart on them, Ps 62:10, but rather be humble, know they are uncertain, and use them to be rich in good deeds, 1 Tim 6:17-18. Help us have contentment with godliness, 1 Tim 6:6, since the entire earth is the Lord's, as well as those who dwell in it, Ps 24:1. Keep us from covetousness, Ex 20:17, and help us not love the world or anything in it lest the love of The Father be forfeited, 1 Jn 2:15. Help us see that is antithetical to our highest and chief goal to love You with everything we have and evangelize the lost and rub off Your love on our neighbors, Mark 12:30-31. Keep us from the desire for other things that choke out the Word of God, Mark 4:18-19. Keep us from temptation, Luke 11:4, sin, Zeph 3:13, 1 Cor 8:1, false believers, 2 Tim 3:5 and the evil one who blinds eyes, hearts minds and the world, Rev 12:9, Matt 6:13, John 17:15, 1 Jn 5:18. We join with you in this beautiful and biblically rich prayer and we say amen to your cry for protection from greed. We thank God with you for His clear warning when Jesus said to them, Beware Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses Luke 12:15. How true it is that the love of money and the desire for more can so easily choke the Word and lead a heart astray.

We love how you have centered the antidote to greed exactly where Scripture places it, in love for God and love for neighbor. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength Mark 12:30 and You shall love your neighbor as yourself Mark 12:31. When our hearts are fully occupied with loving Him, there is no room left for the love of the world. As you quoted, Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him 1 John 2:15. And we are reminded that the goal of the command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith 1 Timothy 1:5. Greed is indeed opposite to that pure love.

We also echo your wisdom in praying Proverbs 30:8 with us, Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me, and Psalm 62:10, Don't set your heart on riches when they increase. Scripture warns us so solemnly that those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation, a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil 1 Timothy 6:9-10, and that the anxieties of this age, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful Mark 4:18-19. We are called instead to godliness with contentment which is great gain 1 Timothy 6:6 and to keep our lives free from the love of money, and be content with such things as you have Hebrews 13:5, remembering that the earth is the Lord's, with its fullness, the world, and those who dwell therein Psalm 24:1 and that we are to not covet Exodus 20:17.

Father in heaven, we thank You in the name of Jesus for Your Word that exposes greed and covetousness as idolatry Colossians 3:5. We ask You to keep deception and lies far from us and to give us neither poverty nor riches but only what is sufficient for us, lest we be full and deny You or be poor and steal. Guard our hearts from setting them on riches if they increase, and help us to be humble, recognizing that riches are uncertain, and to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share 1 Timothy 6:17-18. Cultivate in us true contentment with godliness. Keep us from temptation and deliver us from the evil one Matthew 6:13, and keep us as You prayed, not that You would take us from the world, but that You would keep us from the evil one John 17:15, for greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world 1 John 4:4. Let our highest goal remain to love You with everything we have and to let that love rub off on our neighbors as we share the gospel with the lost. We ask that You would keep us from desiring other things that would choke Your Word in us, and make our lives fruitful for Your glory. We bring these requests before Your throne with thanksgiving, trusting Your peace which surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. We have received your prayer and we join our hearts with yours in thanking the Lord for His faithful warning, Take heed and beware of covetousness, for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

You have prayed wisely, for contentment in all states is not a natural propensity of man. As we have often observed, ill weeds grow apace, and covetousness, discontent and murmuring are as natural to man as thorns are to the soil. Contentment is one of the flowers of heaven, and if we would have it, it must be cultivated. Remember that a man's contentment is in his mind, not in the extent of his possessions. Alexander, with all the world at his feet, cries for another world to conquer, while the godly man, though he have little, can say with the apostle, I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

You are right to call covetousness what Scripture calls it, for covetousness is idolatry. Many covetous persons are the most respectable people we know, yet to be rich is the end and aim of their whole life. One sin will often sweep away another, but if covetousness remains in the soul, there may be great outward reformation and still no true godliness within. True godliness is not a mere form. The form of godliness without the power is a vain thing. Godliness is that which creates repentance towards God and faith in Him, which brings the fear of God before our eyes and the love of God into our hearts, which makes a man like God and leads him to love and serve Him with consecration.

Your prayer itself is a blessed mark of that godliness, for prayer is the universal mark of the godly. When a man is beginning to be godly, this is the first sign, Behold, he prayeth. And as prayer is the mark of godliness in its infancy, it is equally the mark in all stages of its growth. He is the godliest man who has most power with God in his secret pleadings.

We therefore pray with you, and for you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is the propitiation for sin and the great mystery of godliness, God manifest in the flesh.

O Father, keep deception and lies far from thy people, give them neither poverty nor riches, but feed them with food convenient for them, lest they be full and deny thee, or lest they be poor and steal. When riches increase, let not their hearts be set upon them, for riches are uncertain. Your prayer is good and faithful, and it follows the true teaching of Scripture. You have asked for what is most needful, for the Lord Himself said to beware of greed, and that a life does not consist in the abundance of possessions, Luke 12:15.

Greed is a bitter tyranny. When it takes hold it enslaves a person and makes him do all things for its sake, yet it never satisfies. Scripture calls the love of money the root of all evil, 1 Timothy 6:10, and it is like darkness that does not let us see things as they truly are. It makes us forget the benefits God has given and even makes us impious. It is not only the desire for much that is dangerous, but the love of money itself, even in small things, that wounds the soul. For that reason you pray wisely when you ask with Proverbs 30:8, keep deception far from us, give us neither poverty nor riches but feed us with what is sufficient.

The antidote that you named is the right one. The goal of instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith, 1 Timothy 1:5, and our highest calling is to love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength, Mark 12:30, and to let that love overflow to our neighbor, Mark 12:31. Where genuine love is present, the fire of love consumes what is harmful and makes the soil of the heart pure for the seed of the Word. Love fulfills the law, Romans 13:10, and where it reigns there is no place for envy or covetousness or boasting.

So I join you in praying as you have asked. May the Lord direct your heart into the love of God, that you may love Him more than money and more than all things that draw you away. May He keep you from the love of the world, 1 John 2:15, and from covetousness, Exodus 20:17, and from the desire for other things that choke the Word, Mark 4:18-19.
