Prideful

We join with you in bringing this burden before the Lord, for pride is a serious matter in the eyes of God and it affects every one of us and the world around us.

The Bible warns us clearly about pride. Proverbs 16:18 says Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 8:13 says The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth. And James 4:6 tells us God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. This is repeated in 1 Peter 5:5. Pride was at the root of the first sin, when Satan desired to exalt himself above God, and it remains the root that keeps so many from repenting and turning to the Lord. It causes people to trust in themselves, to reject correction, to look down on others, and to refuse to acknowledge their need for God.

We also recognize that none of us is free from this struggle, and we must examine our own hearts as well. Proverbs 11:2 says When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom. God calls us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, but to walk in humility, gentleness and love toward others, considering others better than ourselves as Philippians 2:3 teaches.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Pride keeps many from confessing that they are sinners in need of a Savior, but when we humble ourselves and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we are saved as Romans 10:9 promises. It is our prayer that prideful hearts would be humbled to receive this grace.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, humbling ourselves before Your throne of grace. We confess that pride is an abomination to You and that it leads to destruction. We ask You to have mercy on the people of this world who walk in pride, arrogance and self reliance. Soften their hearts, Lord, and open their eyes to see their need for You. Bring conviction by Your Holy Spirit, that they would turn from pride and humble themselves under Your mighty hand, that You may exalt them in due time as You promise in 1 Peter 5:6. Forgive us where we have harbored pride in our own lives, and create in us clean hearts and humble spirits. Help us to walk in meekness and to reflect the humility of Christ, who humbled Himself even to death on the cross for our sake. Draw many to salvation through Jesus, that they would be clothed with humility and receive Your grace. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and only hope. Amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray for humility in your own life and for others, and to lovingly speak the truth to those who are caught in pride, pointing them to the grace that God freely gives to the humble. As 2 Chronicles 7:14 reminds us, if Your people who are called by Your name will humble themselves, and pray and seek Your face, You will hear from heaven and heal. May we be faithful to pray and to walk humbly before our God.

Thank you for bringing this to prayer. Noticing pride in the world can be heavy, and it is good that your response is to turn it over to the Lord rather than just carry frustration about it.

We join you in asking God to work in hearts where pride has taken hold. Pride so often keeps us from hearing others well and from seeing our own need for God, and it makes relationships harder. Humility is not thinking badly of ourselves or being timid, it is simply being honest before God and willing to value others, and that is something only He can grow in us through reflection and grace over time.

One way we have found it helpful to pray for something this broad is to make it more personal for a few days. If there are one or two people or places where pride has been especially burdening you, bring them by name before the Lord each day this week and ask Him to soften hearts and draw them toward Himself. It can also be a quiet encouragement to ask Him to show us where pride tries to take root in our own lives, so our prayers come from humility and not just concern for others.

Father, we lift up those who are caught in pride and self reliance. Work in their hearts with Your kindness and bring a willingness to hear You and to love others well. Grow humility in all of us and help us walk closely with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We join you in bringing this burden before the throne of grace, for the Word tells us that when destruction walks through the land it casts its shadow before it in the shape of pride, and when honor visits a man's house it casts its shadow before it in the fashion of humility.

There is nothing into which the heart of man so easily falls as pride, and yet there is no vice which is more frequently and more earnestly condemned in Scripture. Its seat is the heart, and its consequence is destruction. The humility which God approves is not that which lives only in the face, but that which is genuine and wrought in the heart by His Spirit, for the imitation of humility is near akin to pride itself.

We pray that the Lord in His mercy would show prideful hearts their true condition before Him. May He grant not a carnal repentance that is of the flesh, but that true repentance unto life which is the gift of God and is preached in the name of Jesus Christ. Such repentance gives God glory, abhors sin because it is committed against so holy and good a God, looks out of self to Christ alone, and yields works meet for repentance.

We ask the Father to lead many to repentance not by driving only, but by drawing, for His goodness leads men to repentance. May He humble the proud, break the stubborn heart, and bring sinners to look to Christ who alone can save, that they may be clothed with true humility and serve the Lord with all humility of mind, before the act, during the service, and when all is done.

Father, have mercy upon those who walk in pride. Grant them a renewed heart, a godly sorrow for sin that needs not to be repented of, and faith to receive remission of sins through the finished work of Christ. Turn pride to lowliness, and destruction to honor, for Your glory. Amen.

Your request to pray for those who are prideful is heard and it is good to bring this before the Lord, for pride does great harm to the soul.

Scripture warns us that pride is the fountain of all wickedness, while humility is the groundwork of all that is good and the principle of all self control. Christ himself said, Blessed are the poor in spirit, and he calls us to serve the Lord with all humility of mind, not with a partial or selective lowliness, but with humility in word and in deed toward all.

The wise have said that the beginning of pride is not to know the Lord, and when people do not know Him they are easily lifted up. Honors and words of good report, and riches in this world, often produce pride and vainglory and arrogance and make people more careless, yet the pleasure of that pride quickly passes away while the harm it causes remains. That is why we must pray not only that pride would be taken away, but that people would come to know the Lord truly.

We join you in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we ask for mercy for all who are lifted up with pride. Open their eyes to know You as You truly are, and grant them a true poverty of spirit. Take away arrogance and vainglory and teach them to hope not in uncertain riches or in the praise of others, but in You who are the giver of all good things. Grant them true repentance, not only tears of regret but a changed heart that turns from pride to humility, and help them to walk in lowliness before You and before others. Make us also humble, that we may not think ourselves better than others, but may speak the truth with love and live with carefulness. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who humbled himself for our salvation. Amen.

Thank you for sharing this burden. Continue to pray that the Lord would humble the proud and exalt the humble in His perfect time and wisdom.

Thank you for bringing this burden before the Lord. Pride is a serious matter in God's sight, and your concern for those caught in it is right and loving.

Scripture is very clear about how God views pride. It is at the top of the list of things the Lord hates, and we are told that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. When a heart settles into ease and self exaltation, it becomes hardened, and God in His mercy often allows disturbances to shake and purify us rather than let us remain comfortable in that condition.

We see this pattern in the Bible. A man can begin with genuine humility and great potential, yet if pride is allowed to enter, he will gradually exalt himself and turn away from God. That deterioration happens slowly as self is lifted up. The same was true of nations like Moab, described as exceedingly proud, lofty and arrogant, and therefore under God's judgment. Even a faithful king like David was provoked in the area of pride when he desired to number the people, wanting to measure his own strength. The enemy often attacks us at this very point, because pride makes us trust ourselves instead of God.

That is why prayer for prideful people must be prayer for true repentance. There is a great difference between sorrow and repentance. Many people are sorry, but only because of the consequences of sin, and they continue in the same way. They may say the words, I have sinned, or even weep, but that alone is not repentance. True repentance means a change, a turning away from the evil and forsaking it, not just feeling bad about it.

We see the difference in Scripture. Esau wept with tears when he lost the blessing, but his tears were not tears of repentance. He was not weeping over his sin against God, he was bitter and angry over the loss itself. He sought the blessing, not a change of heart, and found no place of repentance. On the other hand, godly sorrow works repentance that leads to salvation and to a changed life, while the sorrow of the world only works death. Peter showed godly sorrow when he wept after denying the Lord, and his life was changed afterward. If you ask many people who are suffering the results of their choices whether they are sorry, most will say yes, but repentance is shown when a person actually turns and walks a different way.

John the Baptist called people to a baptism of repentance, which pictured death to the old life and the beginning of a new life. And he told those who came that they must bring forth fruit that demonstrates repentance. The axe is laid to the root of the trees, and a changed life is the evidence that the heart has truly turned.

So we can pray together that God would work in the lives of those who are proud, not simply to make them feel sorry, but to grant them godly sorrow that leads to real change. Pray that He would humble their hearts, open their eyes to see pride as He sees it, and draw them to turn from it and to walk humbly before Him. Pray that any shaking or difficulty they face would not harden them, but would purify them and lead them to seek His grace. And pray that where there has been pride, there would be clear fruit of humility, obedience and a new direction in Christ.

Father, we bring before You all those who are lifted up in pride. You oppose the proud and give grace to the humble. We ask that You would convict them by Your Spirit and grant them not just sorrow over consequences, but true repentance that turns from pride and self exaltation. Break the power of arrogance and haughtiness, and lead them to humility and faith in Jesus Christ. Bring forth in them fruit that shows a changed heart, that they might walk in newness of life for Your glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
