The peace you seek for your mind is not a thing to be had simply by asking, as if it were a gift to be handed over while you remain idle. Our Lord Himself teaches us the way: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Do you hear? He promises rest, but He commands us first to take His yoke and learn of Him. The enemy fills your mind with lies, making you believe that you are beyond hope, that your faults are too great, that happiness for your family is impossible. These are heavy burdens, the chains of the world, which the Holy Spirit will not abide in a soul that clings to them. For it is written, “To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” If your thoughts are fixed on earthly fears and the false promises of the adversary, you drive away the Spirit of peace. He can only be held fast when you set your mind on heavenly things, earnestly and with wakeful attention.
Consider this: the enemy’s lies have no power over a heart that is perfected in the fear of God. When you fear the Lord, you need fear nothing else. The prophet says, “The Lord is a stronghold of them that fear Him, and His covenant is to show them.” The man who walks in virtue, who keeps a good conscience before God, is safe and confident; but he who entertains sin is never at ease, for his own thoughts accuse him. You long for freedom from fear and the abundant life Christ promised. Do not imagine that this life is a life without struggle or hardship. True freedom is not release from outward trials but the soul’s liberty that virtue brings. Even in poverty or reproach, a righteous man is more honorable than the rich, more joyful than princes. The abundant life is to know and love Christ more, and we grow in that love not by seeking consolations alone, but by doing praiseworthy deeds in His sight, not for vanity, but out of a pure heart.
You pray for peace and happiness in your family. But peace is the companion of righteousness. Where sin enters, love grows cold, and concord is broken. The covetous man cannot live at peace with his neighbor; the proud man is always at war. If you want your household to be covered with grace and mercy, then teach them the fear of the Lord. As the psalmist says, “Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” Perfect holiness in that fear, rooting out every passion which severs the bond of charity. Let each one in your home depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it. Then the Spirit of love will dwell richly among you, and you will know a peace that the world cannot give.
And do not say within yourself, “I am weak; I cannot silence these lying thoughts.” The yoke of Christ is easy. He does not mock you. If you take it up with a willing mind, if you learn of His meekness and lowliness, you will find the rest He promises. The Spirit of truth will scatter the shadows of the enemy; He will direct all your affairs in security and great peace. Only do not drive Him away by minding the things of this life. Set your affection on things above, where Christ sits. Let the fear of God be your tutor, and watch how the burdens grow light, how the lies lose their sting, how your whole household is fenced about with mercy. This is the true healing of the mind, and it is close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, if you will obey.
