Praying for justice and realization

Your pain and stress are seen by God, and it is right to bring your sorrow honestly before Him. He is close to the brokenhearted and He hears every prayer offered in truth.

At the same time, the way this prayer is framed needs to be gently corrected in love, because asking God to make another person feel the same hurt you feel, and to keep praying for that kind of justice until he acts as you want him to, will harm your own soul more than it will help. Scripture warns that a root of bitterness springing up will trouble you and defile many around you. When we nurse the desire for someone else to suffer as we have suffered, that root is allowed to grow. It does not bring peace, it keeps the wound open.

God is perfectly just, and He does see every wrong. Yet if He dealt with any of us according to strict justice alone, none of us could stand, for we have all needed far greater forgiveness than we are ever called to give. That is why He mingles mercy with justice. He has taught us to have a gentle and human soul, and He calls us to show the same consideration to others that He has shown to us. We come to Him daily asking forgiveness for great debts, and He asks us in turn to forgive as we have been forgiven.

This does not mean that what was done to you does not matter, or that an apology is not needed. It does mean that your freedom cannot be made to depend on whether he apologizes or treats you as he once did. To pray, until he changes, that he will feel your pain keeps you bound to waiting for his response. The gospel frees you to release that burden to God now, to forgive from the heart even before the other person repents, just as Christ forgave us while we were still far off.

Instead of asking God to make him feel your hurt or to bring consequences upon him, we can pray in a way that seeks healing for both of you. We can ask God to work in his heart to bring true conviction and repentance if he has done wrong, to give you comfort and strength and wisdom in your hurt, to guard your heart from bitterness, and to lead both of you toward what is holy and good according to His will. Vengeance belongs to the Lord, and we can trust Him to judge rightly while we pursue mercy and peace.

Let me pray for you in that way. Father, you see this hurt and the stress it has caused. Bring comfort and healing where there is pain, and guard this heart from bitterness and resentment. Grant repentance where repentance is needed, and help both hearts to seek truth and grace. Teach us to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to trust Your perfect justice and mercy. Give wisdom for what steps to take next, and surround this situation with godly counsel and support. In Jesus name, amen.

If you are carrying this burden alone, please seek a trusted pastor or mature believer to walk with you, to help you process this hurt biblically and to discern wise next steps. Continue to bring your pain to God, but let your prayers be for mercy, healing, and restoration rather than for suffering in return.
