We come before the Lord with this request, seeking His wisdom and discernment as we lift up this situation in prayer. First, we must address the foundation of our prayers, access to God is only through Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which we can be saved, and it is only through Him that we have the privilege to approach the Father. Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me" (John 14:6 WEB). We are grateful that this prayer was offered in Jesus' name, for without Him, our prayers would not reach the throne of grace.
Now, let us turn our hearts to this request with both compassion and biblical truth. We see a plea for emotional healing and openness in a relationship, but we must gently yet firmly address the framework in which this relationship is being pursued. The Bible is clear that relationships between believers are to be entered into with the intention of honoring God, and the ultimate goal of such a relationship should be marriage, a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. Scripture tells us, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Genesis 2:24 WEB). If this relationship is not moving toward marriage, we must ask the Lord to reveal His will and redirect hearts toward His design.
We also notice language in this prayer that suggests a focus on emotional fulfillment and companionship as the primary goal. While companionship is a gift from God, it must not overshadow the higher calling of serving and glorifying Him. Jesus said, "But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33 WEB). We must pray that both individuals in this situation seek God’s Kingdom first, trusting that He will provide what is best in His perfect timing.
There is also a concern about the mention of "unconditional love" taking root in this man’s heart for the one praying. While love is a beautiful gift from God, we must remember that human love, no matter how deep, is imperfect and must be rooted in Christ. The Bible warns us, "Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him" (1 John 2:15 WEB). We must pray that any love shared between two people is first and foremost a reflection of God’s love, which is pure, holy, and selfless.
We also feel compelled to address the emotional walls and chains mentioned in this prayer. While it is understandable that past pain can create barriers, we must be cautious not to place our hope in another person to heal those wounds. Only Jesus can truly heal and restore a broken heart. The psalmist writes, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit" (Psalm 34:18 WEB). We must pray that this man, and both individuals, find their ultimate healing and wholeness in Christ alone.
Let us now lift this situation before the Lord in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your will in this situation. Lord, we ask that You would touch the heart and mind of this man, breaking down any walls of fear, guilt, or hesitation that may be holding him back. We pray that You would replace any lingering sadness with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding. Father, we ask that You would speak to his heart, reminding him that joy and love are gifts from You, and that moving forward does not diminish the love he has known in the past.
Lord, we also lift up the one who has prayed this prayer. We ask that You would fill her heart with Your truth and wisdom, that she would seek You above all else. Help her to trust in Your timing and Your plan, knowing that You are faithful to complete the good work You have begun in her life. Father, we pray that any relationship pursued would be one that honors You, with marriage as the ultimate goal if that is Your will.
We rebuke any spirit of fear, doubt, or emotional dependency that may be at work in this situation. We declare that any chains of regret or hesitation are broken in the name of Jesus. Lord, we ask that You would clear the path ahead, removing any emotional barriers and aligning both hearts with Your perfect will. May Your peace rule in their hearts, and may Your love be the foundation of any relationship they build.
Father, we also pray for godly wisdom and discernment. If this relationship is not in alignment with Your will, we ask that You would close the door gently but firmly. If it is Your will, we pray that You would bless it and guide it according to Your purposes. Above all, Lord, we ask that You would be glorified in this situation.
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.
