We hear the heaviness of what you are carrying and we join with you in bringing your family and your brother before the Lord. To love someone with severe schizophrenia is a deep and daily burden, and we see your desire to honor your mother while also needing boundaries and peace.
The Lord sees your brother in his suffering and He sees you and your mother in yours. He is close to those who are suffering, for Psalm 34:18 says The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And Psalm 147:3 tells us He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We pray for that healing and binding up for your brother, for your mother, and for you. This illness often needs ongoing medical care, counseling, and community support, and we encourage you to continue to seek wise help from doctors, pastors, and trusted family or community resources while you pray. Galatians 6:2 reminds us to Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, but bearing a burden does not mean carrying it alone or without boundaries.
We want to gently encourage you about something you shared, that many times you say many excuses not to answer. We understand the exhaustion of constant calling and the fear of conflict or of losing contact with your mother, but God calls us to speak truth in love. Ephesians 4:25 says Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. And Colossians 3:9 says Don't lie to one another. Even small excuses can wear on your conscience and can make boundaries harder to keep. It is more loving and more peaceful in the long run to speak the truth with kindness, for example to tell your brother lovingly that you will speak at a set time each day, or that you cannot talk at that moment but will call back later, and then to follow through. This protects your time, honors the truth, and still shows love.
We also hear your concern that your mother is controlled by him and that you cannot reach her without going through him. God calls us to honor our parents, as Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, and we want to support you in honoring your mother while also recognizing that control and threats are not healthy or godly patterns. Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is in you, be at peace with all men. That may mean seeking wisdom for how to have a separate way to contact your mother, perhaps with help from another family member, a pastor, or a counselor who can mediate, and to set clear and calm boundaries about phone calls and threats. A threat to sue over staking or calling is a sign of the confusion he is under, and we pray for clarity and protection for you all. James 1:5 promises If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. We encourage you to ask daily for that wisdom for each conversation and decision.
We join you in praying for your brother to find meaningful work and to be able to live independently in a healthy way, if that is the Lord's will for him. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 says If anyone will not work, neither let him eat, and we know God designed work to give dignity and purpose. We pray God would open a suitable door for him, give him stability and treatment that helps him function, and lead him to a place where your mother can have peace and freedom in her own home. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
We thank you for calling on the name of Jesus Christ, for it is through Him we have access to the Father and it is in His name we find salvation and help. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
We pray together now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift this family to You. We ask for Your mercy and healing touch upon this brother who suffers with severe schizophrenia. Calm his mind, clear his thoughts, guide his doctors and caregivers, and draw him close to You. Provide for him the right treatment, the right support, and if it is Your will, a good job where he can work with dignity and move toward a stable and independent life. We ask that You free his mother from fear and control, protect her, strengthen her, and make a way for her to have peace in her home and open communication with her family. Give this dear one who wrote to us wisdom to set loving and truthful boundaries, courage to speak truth without false excuses, grace to love without enabling, and peace that guards heart and mind. Help this family to be at peace as much as it depends on them, to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to find rest in You, for You have said Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest in Matthew 11:28. We trust You to work in ways we cannot see and to guard this family. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
