We have heard your four unspoken requests and we count it a privilege to bear these burdens with you before the throne of grace. It is written, Bear you one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ, and this we do also by much prayer for the other when words are few and the heart keeps its sorrows between itself and God.
We do not know the particulars which you have kept unspoken, but He who hears in secret knows them fully. The Psalmist said, I have declared my ways and You heard me, and the believer who lives near to God finds that God hears him and has communion with him wherever he goes. You may therefore bring each of these four matters and declare them plainly to Him, for worldly men live at a distance from Him, but His children speak with Him and hear His voice in return.
We pray that you will be enabled to trust and not fear. It is a blessed thing when sin burdens us to fly away to Christ and stand in spirit beneath the cross and feel that under that crimson canopy no flash of divine penalty shall ever fall upon us. If you can say, I got it straight from the throne of God by trusting in the blood of Jesus Christ, then you will know that you received it from headquarters and there can be no mistake about it. Do not be always saying, Do I love the Lord or no, Am I His or am I not, but take God at His word, for it is true humility to believe Him when He says He will save you if you trust His Son. Salvation is not by ceremonies and works of the law, for even perfect obedience would only be our duty, but by grace through faith in the great Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God, having present peace and future perfection in Him.
We pray also that you may rejoice because God has spoken in His holiness. While you wait for God to answer, remember that God has already spoken, and faith finds joy in the very fact that God has spoken. We ask, Will not You, O God, act through Your people so that Your mercy which is great unto the heavens may be seen, and that You may be exalted above the heavens and Your glory above all the earth in the answering of these prayers according to Your wisdom.
Some burdens each man must bear himself, and some the Lord lays upon us that we may learn obedience, but He will bear all your burdens for you if you come unto Him who says, Come unto Me all you that labour and are heavy laden. If any of these unspoken requests concern sin that presses you down, look to the Son of God pouring out His life and trust Him, for then your sins would be gone in a moment. If they concern straits and difficulties, now is the time to exercise faith upon a living God, for your God is not worth having if He cannot help you when you want help. He pleads the cause of His saints, and it is Christ that died, yea rather that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God who also makes intercession for us.
Though you leave these four requests unspoken to us, leave none unspoken to Him. If you think God has forsaken you or delays, do not give up prayer, but like your Lord cry, My God, My God, again and again. The godly in their anguish turn to the hand which smites them, and true sonship makes a double effort to draw near and says with reverence, You are ever God to me and I yield to Your sacred sovereignty. Though clouds may surround you, our God is our light, though storms rage around us, our God is our might.
We will continue to bear you up in prayer, asking the Lord to do as seems good in His sight, to give you light, strength and rest in Christ, and to grant answers that accord with His holy will and for your eternal good through Jesus Christ our Lord.
