Job’s friends were certain that trouble always pointed to hidden sin. They meant to speak for God, but they became miserable comforters because they could not imagine a reason for suffering beyond simple cause and effect. Yet heaven’s perspective was completely different. God had bragged on Job; Satan was allowed to test him, and Job never cursed God, even when everything was stripped away. He fell on his face and worshiped, saying, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return.”
