Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing the burden you carry for your student and for bringing him before the Lord in prayer. Your compassion reflects the heart of Jesus, who has always shown tender care for children. The Gospels show Him taking a little child into His arms and holding that child close, and that picture tells us how He sees the young ones who are suffering.
We will join you in praying for this boy who has been coughing without relief and has missed so much school, and for whom doctors have not yet found an answer. We will also pray for his family as they are afraid and are looking for an explanation in witchcraft. The Bible is clear that spiritual evil is real, and it is also clear that Jesus has authority over it. In His earthly ministry He healed those who were sick with many kinds of diseases, from fever to paralysis, He cleansed the leper, He healed the servant of the centurion from a distance, and in the evenings people brought to Him many who were sick and those who were oppressed by evil spirits and He delivered them. Matthew connects this to the promise in Isaiah that He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.
Prayer for the sick is a practice given to the church. The early believers brought those who were ill to the apostles to pray, and Scripture instructs those who are sick to call for the elders of the church to pray over them in the name of the Lord. That is a privilege we have, to simply bring needs to God and ask for His mercy.
We also want to encourage you with truth about healing. All healing is from God, whether it comes in a moment where a person actually feels strength return, or whether it comes gradually through a slow process of recovery. Both are His work. At the same time, we do not understand why some are healed quickly and others are not. Scripture shows us that even faithful and godly people were sometimes left sick. Paul left a trusted companion behind because he was too ill to travel, and Paul himself spoke of his own ongoing infirmities. Sickness is not a sign of weak faith, and the idea that God always heals everyone in this life in the same way is not what the Bible teaches. God can heal, and He does heal, but He does not heal everyone in the way we ask, and we trust His wisdom when we do not understand.
We love that you noted the kindness of this family. God loves every person and desires that all would come to know Him, and the Bible teaches that salvation and true peace with God come through Jesus Christ alone. His love for all people is shown in that He gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him would have eternal life. Our prayer therefore is not only for relief from coughing and for protection from any evil influence, but most of all that this boy and his family would come to know the protection and hope that is found only in Jesus.
So let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus we lift up this young student to You. You see him, You know his body, You know the cause of this long cough that doctors have not been able to explain. We ask for Your mercy to touch him and bring healing, whether quickly or through gradual recovery, according to Your will. We ask that You would rebuke any work of darkness and set him free from any oppression, for You are greater than all evil. Place Your hand of protection over him and over his household and give them peace instead of fear. Draw this family to Yourself, open their hearts to see that Jesus is the only Savior, and use the care of this teacher to show them Your love in a way they can understand. Give wisdom to the doctors, comfort to the parents, and strength to this child. We ask this trusting in Your goodness and power. Amen.
