Prayers for insomnia

Disciple of Prayer
Dear all. Please pray for my daughter who has insomnia. She takes her MCAT on Friday ### and she really needs a restful sleep to do well. Thank you to all who prayed for her. Please pray for her to do well for the exam, to perform up to her best ability and potential and to be able to get a spot in ### to become a doctor.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up your daughter in prayer as she faces this critical time in her life. Father God, we know that You neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:4), and we ask that You would grant her the rest she so desperately needs. The MCAT is a significant milestone, and we pray that You would calm her mind and body, allowing her to sleep peacefully and wake refreshed. Lord, we ask that You would remove any anxiety or fear that may be keeping her awake, replacing it with Your perfect peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

We also pray for her performance on the exam. Father, You have given her the ability to learn and retain knowledge, and we ask that You would bring to her remembrance all that she has studied (John 14:26). May she approach this test with confidence, knowing that her strength comes from You (Philippians 4:13). We pray that she would perform to the best of her ability, not for her own glory, but for Yours, as she seeks to serve others through the profession of medicine.

Lord, we ask that You would open the doors to medical school for her. Guide her steps and lead her to the institution where You would have her grow and learn. We know that it is You who establishes our steps (Proverbs 16:9), and we trust in Your perfect plan for her life.

We must also address the importance of seeking You, Lord, in all things. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to You (John 14:6). There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We pray that your daughter knows Jesus as her Lord and Savior, for it is in Him that we find true rest (Matthew 11:28) and eternal life.

Heavenly Father, we pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus. May Your will be done in her life, and may she come to know You more deeply through this experience. We trust in Your goodness and faithfulness, and we thank You for hearing our prayers. Amen.

We’re holding your daughter in prayer as Friday approaches, and we’re grateful you reached out. That kind of night-before restlessness is something so many of us recognize, especially with something as weighty as the MCAT riding on it. When sleep won’t come, the mind can spiral, and it’s hard to feel ready.

One small thing that has helped others we’ve prayed with is having gentle, Christ-centered music playing softly at bedtime, not as a cure, but as a way to anchor the heart while the body rests. Some people find that familiar hymns or quiet worship songs quiet the internal noise in a way silence doesn’t. If that feels right for your daughter, it might be worth trying tonight. And if her sleep struggles linger beyond this exam, we’d encourage her to mention it to a doctor, not because anything is wrong, but because rest matters, and she deserves good support.

We’re also praying for her mind during the exam itself: that she would think clearly, recall what she’s studied, and have peace that steadies her hand. But beyond the test, we’re asking God to guide her path into medicine in whatever way he sees best, trusting that her future isn’t held in a single score, but in his faithful hands.

Let’s pray together now.

Lord Jesus, you never sleep, and you watch over this daughter tonight. Quiet her mind, settle her body, and give her deep, restoring rest. When she sits for the MCAT, let her mind be sharp and her spirit calm. Help her to do her best, and then to release the outcome to you. Walk with her into whatever comes next, and give her mom steady peace as well. We ask this in your name. Amen.

You lie awake yourself, listening in the dark for the small sounds of a house that will not settle, footsteps, a sigh, the creak of a bed that gives no rest. It is no small thing to watch your child suffer, even in so quiet a way as sleeplessness. Your heart aches with each hour that slips past, and you wonder how she will manage when Friday dawns. But I would have you remember this: our Lord sees the sparrow fall, and He numbers the hairs of her head. The same tender eye that marks the tossing of the sea marks the restlessness of her pillow, and He is not unmoved.

Sleep, you know, is one of God’s choicest medicines, better than all the apothecary’s draughts. He gives it to the labouring man after his toil, and He gives it to His beloved, not as a wage for perfect trust, but simply because He loves them. When the psalmist says, “He giveth his beloved sleep,” it is after he has told us that it is vain to rise early and sit up late, eating the bread of sorrows. Your daughter has worked hard; she has given her mind to her books and her heart to her hope. But in the end, neither her success nor her sleep hangs upon her own striving. They rest in the hand of a Father who knows what His child needs before she asks.

Picture her, then, not as a student facing a stern examiner, but as a lamb that the Shepherd carries close to His heart. When a sheep is lame, or weary, or has wandered into some rough place, the Good Shepherd does not drive it on with sharp cries. He lifts it up, lays it across His shoulders, and brings it home. Your daughter’s fears, fears of failure, of forgetting, of a door closed against her future, are the rough places. But Christ is gentler than her anxious thoughts. He does not despise the struggle of a soul that wants to serve Him in the healing of others. Tell her that she may lay down the burden of performance and simply ask for the sleep He gives to His beloved. No prayer is too small: “Lord, let me rest, for You are awake” is a cry He will never ignore.

And you, dear mother, may do the same. The Lord who stilled the tempest with a word can quiet the flutter of a mind too full of tomorrow. I remember that our Saviour once found His own disciples sleeping on the night of His greatest sorrow, and He did not rage at them, He said, “The spirit truly is willing, but the flesh is weak.” What a merciful word for all of us who are weary! So do not scold yourself for your anxiety, as though your faith must be flawless before God will act. Cast the care of these next days right upon Him, who cares for you both.

I pray, then, that this very night the Lord will draw the curtains of His peace around your daughter’s bed, and that she will sink into a sleep so pure and deep that she wakes as one refreshed by angels. And when she sits at her exam, may the quiet confidence of that rest remain with her. May the Lord bring to her memory all she has diligently stored, and may He give her a clear mind and a steady hand. We ask no more than she needs, and no less than He has promised to those who trust Him. And may you, too, find rest, even while you watch and wait, for He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

Lord Jesus, you who took little children in your arms and blessed them, look now upon this daughter, weary and heavy-laden. Speak peace to her soul, and give her body the sleep that restores. Calm the racing thoughts, ease the tension of hope and fear, and let her know in the darkness that she is held by the love that will never let her go. For her mother, too, we ask the same gift: quietness of heart and confidence in you. And beyond the exam, we entrust all her future into your wise and woundable hands, for you do all things well. Amen.

We are so grateful you shared your heart with us and allowed us to lift your daughter before the Lord. It has been our privilege to stand in agreement with you, praying for peaceful, restorative sleep to quiet her mind and renew her strength as she prepared for her MCAT. We also prayed earnestly for clarity of thought, calm confidence, and the full release of her God-given ability during the exam. Now that the test is behind her, we continue to pray that the Lord will open the right door for her to step into the calling He has placed on her life—to train and serve as a physician.

If the Lord has already answered with restful nights and a sense of His peace during the exam, we would love to hear a praise report so we can rejoice together. If sleep is still elusive or anxiety lingers about the outcome, please share your request again so we can keep praying without ceasing. Either way, we stand with you, trusting that our faithful God hears every prayer and works all things for His glory and your daughter’s good.

May He bless her with His presence, guide her steps, and fill her heart with hope as she waits on Him. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus.
