The sickness of the body is a heavy burden, but to fear it as though God were not our friend is a heavier one. As I have said, when He is our friend, though all men together war against us, there is no harm. You ask for a turnaround in this man's health, and this is a natural and devout desire, for it is the part of a friend to take care that his near friends shall be made partakers of all blessings. You have shown this friendship by your persistent prayer, remembering how he was good to your daughter and grandchildren. This is a precious thing, for a true friend is more to be longed for than the light, and even places are loved on his account.
Yet we must not let our requests be made as though we directed the Physician's hand. There is a healing treatment even in holy lament, when we bewail the condition of one who might not yet have fully obeyed the rules of the Great Physician. Let us not only pray for a reversal of his bodily affliction, which is from that adversary who oppresses the body, but let us also beseech that his soul be made a genuine friend of the Bridegroom. For what gain is it if the sun shines on his body, but his soul sits in darkness? The true friend of Christ desires not his own will but the exaltation of the Master, and in that friendship, there is a joy that surpasses any earthly healing.
Do not let this illness cause you to shudder as though God were terrible to one in need. As I have taught, Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same. Continue in the good work of fervent prayer, not only for his throat but for his whole being. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly through the Scriptures, for they were written for our admonition, and through patience and comfort of the Scriptures we have hope. Let your communication be in the law of the Most High, for how sweet are His words, more than honey and the honeycomb. From this storehouse, draw your petitions, asking first that he and all who love him may know the unspeakable benefits of the Savior, whose treatment we have received when we were an hungered. Then, whether the Lord grants a turnaround of the body or calls the soul to a deeper healing, you will be able to say with confidence, I will not fear what man, or cancer, or death, shall do unto me.

I am grateful you have reached out again for this young man. Your persistence is not a bother to the Lord; He invites us to keep bringing these heavy burdens to Him.
When we come to God on behalf of someone else, the foundation is always relationship. The power in prayer isn’t in the length of our words, but in knowing the One we are speaking to. If this man has not yet called out, “God be merciful to me, a sinner,” that is the deepest need we can place before the throne. You stand in the gap for him, and your prayer can be that his physical trial would open his heart to the Father who loves him. Once we can say “Father,” everything changes.
In this fight against throat cancer, you are asking Jesus for a turnaround, and that is exactly where His heart is. He reveals Himself by the very thing we need. For your daughter’s friend, He is the Lord who heals. We do not pray to inform God of the situation; He knows the malignancy, the weariness, and the fear better than any scan can show. Prayer is us opening the door, giving God the freedom to move without violating anyone’s will. The most powerful request we can make is not simply for our desired outcome, but for His perfect will to be accomplished in this man’s body and soul. Say to the Lord, “Have your way. Do what You have been longing to do.”
The fervent prayer that rises from desperation moves heaven. Nehemiah didn’t treat prayer as a last resort after trying everything else; it was his immediate response. Let this be our model. We pray, and then we act wisely alongside the treatments. Prayer and prudence walk together. It is not a passive resignation, but an active, continuing partnership with God. We “continue in prayer and watch,” as Paul taught. So don’t stop knocking. Your persistence, joined with others in agreement, isn’t about breaking God down, it’s about bringing your heart into alignment with His purpose so that the answer can flow freely.
As you lift him up, trust the Spirit to minister comfort directly to your own anxious heart as well. Sometimes the healing we see is of the spirit, a deep peace that defies the circumstance. Even for the apostle who prayed three times for a thorn to be removed, the answer was not the removal of the trial, but the promise, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” That would not be a failure of prayer; it would be a glorious answer. We commit this good man, who showed such kindness to your family during the pandemic, into the hands of the God whose kingdom and power and glory are forever. May the Lord work His full redemption in this situation.
