Prayers for a guy I used to know and my sister

Lynetta Dove

Disciple of Prayer
I might not have given full context last time but me and this guy were not in a talking stage or anything. We were ###/### not knowing what we were doing and denying our feelings but I miss him so much. Please pray for him. I’m not sure why you guys don’t allow names anymore but in case it doesn’t tag his name is ###. I don’t know what he’s doing right now or how he’s been but please pray for him to know Christ and also that if we are meant to be together that he’ll also feel the same and that we’d both prepare ourselves for each other. My heart constantly goes back to him because I feel emotionally safe and seen. I don’t know how to describe it. I miss him so much. Also please pray for my sister to be healed in Jesus’ name. She’s had a bad cough and she has medicine now but we don’t know what’s causing it. She’s missing work because of it.

We join you in prayer and thank you for sharing more of your heart with us. We hear how deeply you miss this young man and how safe and seen you felt with him, and we also hear your burden for your sister as she struggles with this cough and misses work. We bring both of these before the Lord together in Jesus name.

We want to speak gently and honestly about the relationship you described. You mentioned you were not in a talking stage or courtship but in an undefined situation where you were denying feelings and not knowing what you were doing. God designed relationships between a man and a woman to move with clarity and purpose toward marriage, not to remain in confusion or emotional entanglement without commitment. His will is for courtship that honors Him and looks toward a lifelong marriage between a man and a woman as one husband and one wife. If there was any physical intimacy outside of marriage in that undefined time, scripture calls that fornication and calls us to flee from it and to repent. As it is written, Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Corinthians 6:18 and Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers Hebrews 13:4. Even without physical involvement, an emotionally enmeshed yet uncommitted bond can wound the heart and keep us from fully following Christ. We encourage you to guard your heart, for out of it are the issues of life Proverbs 4:23, and to bring these feelings honestly to the Lord rather than denying them, asking Him to purify your desires and to help you pursue purity. God calls us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers 2 Corinthians 6:14, which is why your prayer that this young man would come to know Christ is so important. A godly marriage can only be built when both are believers walking with Jesus, and any future courtship must be with a fellow believer with marriage as the goal.

We also hear your longing that if you are meant to be together he would feel the same and that you would both be prepared for each other. That is a tender prayer, and we join you in surrendering it fully to God's will. The Lord delights to give good gifts, and as we delight ourselves in the Lord He will give us the desires of our heart Psalm 37:4, but that promise is fulfilled as we are transformed by the renewing of our mind to know His good and perfect will Romans 12:2. We encourage you to seek first His kingdom and to let Him shape you into the godly wife He is calling you to be, trusting that if the Lord wills marriage between you and this young man it will be in His timing and in a way that honors Christ and brings clarity, commitment, and peace, not confusion. If not, God is still faithful to heal your heart and to lead you to the spouse He has for you. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3.

For your sister, we lift her up for healing and comfort. Our God is the Lord who heals us Jeremiah 30:17 and we are reminded that the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up James 5:15. We pray for wisdom for her doctors, for the medicine to be effective, for the root cause to be revealed, and for her strength and peace as she misses work. We also pray against anxiety and remind you both to cast your cares on Him, for He cares for you 1 Peter 5:7, and that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7.

We pray together now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we thank You that we have access to Your throne of grace through Him alone. We lift up this young man to You. You know him by name, You see where he is and how he is doing, and we ask that You draw him to Yourself. Open his eyes to see his need for a Savior, grant him repentance and faith in Jesus, and make him a new creation who walks in Your truth. If it is Your will for our sister and this young man to be brought together in a Christ centered courtship that leads to marriage, we ask that You work in both hearts at the same time, prepare them in holiness and maturity, and make Your will unmistakably clear. If it is not Your will, we ask that You gently heal her heart, remove any idol of this relationship, and help her to find her emotional safety and identity fully in You while You guard her from further entanglement. Forgive any sin in this past situation and cleanse both where purity was compromised, and teach her to walk in the sanctification You desire, that each should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor 1 Thessalonians 4:4. Lord we also lift up her sister to You. Lay Your healing hand upon her, ease this cough, restore her lungs and body, reveal what is causing this illness, and restore her strength so she may return to work. Give her and her family peace and provision in this time. Help them both to trust You with all their hearts and not lean on their own understanding, acknowledging You in all their ways Proverbs 3:5-6. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord daily in His Word and in prayer, to pursue fellowship and counsel from mature believers, and to keep clear and godly boundaries with this young man as you entrust him to God. Do not be discouraged by waiting or by missing him. God is near to you, He sees your tears, and He is able to keep you and to write your story for His glory. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and He will direct your paths.

We hear how heavy this feels for you right now, missing him so much and carrying that sense of being safe and truly seen when you were together. Thank you for sharing that so honestly, and for wanting prayer for him to come to know Christ. That is a beautiful, selfless thing to pray.

We are joining you in asking God to draw him to Himself, and to guide you both as you each seek the Lord. When feelings linger like this, it helps to place them openly before God and ask Him to shape your heart for whatever He has ahead, trusting Him to make His will clear in time and to prepare you to walk it faithfully. If you have a mature, trusted believer in your life, it can also help to talk through these longings with them so you are not carrying them alone.

We are also praying for your sister. It is worrying when a cough hangs on and keeps her from work, even with medicine. Since you do not yet know the cause, we encourage you to stay in close touch with her clinician alongside prayer, so she can get continued care and rest.

Father, we bring this young man before You and ask that You draw him to Jesus and show him Your love and truth. We bring our friend and her sister before You, asking for Your comfort, wisdom, and healing for her body, and for peace and clarity for our friend as she trusts You with her heart. Lead them both in Your perfect will. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your heart has poured itself out with honesty, and such honesty is not lost before the Lord who sees in secret. There is a tenderness in your words toward this young man, and a sorrow in your missing him, and there is also a right desire that he should know Christ. That last desire is the best and highest of all, and we will join you in it with all our hearts.

You speak of a past entanglement where you were not knowing what you were doing and denying your feelings. Whatever confusion or sin has marked that season, take it humbly to the cross. Scripture teaches that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that the intimacy which belongs to marriage belongs only within it. What lies outside that holy boundary, however sweet it may have felt for a season, is not to be cherished or continued, but to be repented of and forsaken. He who sincerely repents of sin will hate it and find no pleasure in it, and will loathe even the approach of evil, and will look for all in Christ. There is healing for the wounded only in His blood. Bad money may pass on earth, but genuine gold alone will be received in heaven, and no reformation can atone for the past. We must be humbled in the dust and made to look for all in Christ, or else we shall be deceived after all.

Therefore we cannot ask God to bless or to restore a relationship as it was in confusion, nor to simply give you the feelings you desire apart from His holy will. But we do hold and teach that though the will of man is not ignored, the work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and so make men willing in the day of His power. So we will pray that the Lord will work in both of you to will and to do of His good pleasure, that you may be made willing to follow Christ fully. If it be the Lord's will that your paths should meet again, let it be not in the old way of uncertainty and denial, but in a new way of holiness, with clear purpose toward that covenant of marriage if God so ordains, and with purity kept before Him. It is the comfortable conviction of all God's people that all things work together for good to them that love God, and that God ruleth and overruleth, and from seeming evil still produceth good. Let it be said in your life, God's will is done, hallelujah, hallelujah. That is safer than any wish of our own. While you wait, give yourself to seek Christ, to drink from the flowing crystal which streams from the sacred fountain which Jesus opened for His people, and to grow in faith, for faith takes to herself this thought that in the victory she shall share her reward.

For your sister we will pray also. We very speedily care for bodily diseases, for they are painful and urge us to seek a physician, and you have done well to see that she has medicine. Yet there is a Physician above all physicians. He has said, I will not fail you nor forsake you, and again, I will make all your bed in your sickness. He who feeds the ravens will not allow a soul that rests upon Him to perish for lack of care. We will ask the Lord to lay His hand upon her, to give skill to those who care for her, to reveal the cause of this cough, and to restore her to health for His glory, that she may return to her work in strength. If it pleases God it must please us, and we bow to His wisdom even as we plead for mercy.

Let us pray together.

O Lord our God, look in mercy upon this soul who confesses her longing and her weakness. Wash her in the blood of Christ, and wash also this young man, that he may know Christ and be found in Him. Forgive what has been amiss, and create in both a clean heart and a right spirit. Keep them from presumption and from every path that would dishonor Thee. Make them willing in the day of Thy power, and teach them to seek first Thy kingdom and Thy righteousness. If it be Thy will that they should walk together in life, prepare them in holiness and truth for that covenant, and if not, give contentment to rest in Thy will which is always good. Heal the brokenness of heart, and heal also the sister who is afflicted with this cough. Touch her body, ease her breathing, and raise her up again. We ask not for our will but Thine to be done, trusting Thy promise that Thou wilt never leave nor forsake Thine own. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly and for trusting us to pray for you and for your sister. We hear how much you miss this young man, how safe and seen you felt with him, and also how heavy this uncertainty feels. We also hear your concern and love for your sister as she deals with this persistent cough.

We want to pray for you with both truth and compassion. God created intimacy and the deep comfort of being known to be enjoyed within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. Any sexual intimacy outside of that covenant, even when feelings are confused or denied, falls short of His good design and can leave our hearts more entangled and hurting. That does not mean you are beyond His love. Scripture teaches that when we turn back to God with repentance, He does not reproach us for the past. The precious blood of Jesus Christ, received in faith, cleanses us and has power to heal every disease of the soul. Together with hearing the Scriptures and walking in obedience, God gives us strength to put to death those affections that would otherwise rule over us. Those passions can feel cruel and insatiable, promising comfort but never fully satisfying, and they can dull our longing for Christ Himself. God invites you into a different kind of safety, one rooted in His tender mercy and faithful love, which does not shift with circumstances.

For that reason we will not ask God to bless or preserve a relationship as it was outside His design, but we will gladly pray for what is truly good for both of you. We will pray that this young man would come to know Christ, that he would be saved through Jesus alone, and that you both would be drawn closer to the Lord first. True love, the kind that is for God's sake, wants what is holy and good for the other person even more than it wants to be loved in return. It is mingled with reverence for God and a willingness to yield to His will, even when our own longings are strong. So we will pray that God would give you wisdom, purity, and peace, that He would help you prepare yourself for whatever future He has for you, and that if marriage is ever His will for you two, it would be pursued in a clear, committed and holy way that honors Him. If not, we pray He would guard your heart, ease this ache, and show you His perfect care and timing.

We also join you in praying for your sister. We ask the Lord to have mercy on her, to guide her doctors, to make her medicine effective, and to bring healing to her lungs and body so her cough would leave and she could return to work in strength. We pray He would comfort her and your family while you wait for answers.

Let us pray together. Father, we thank You for Your mercy and for the blood of Jesus that cleanses all who trust in Him. We lift this young man to You and ask that You would reveal Yourself to him and bring him to saving faith in Christ. We lift this dear one who wrote to us, asking that You would comfort her, forgive and renew her, fill her with Your Spirit, and help her to love You above all else. Teach her to find her deepest sense of being seen and safe in You, and to walk in purity and wisdom. Lead both of them according to Your perfect will, and give them contentment to trust You with the future. And Lord, we lift her sister to You, asking for healing in Jesus name. Touch her body, remove this cough, give wisdom for its cause, and restore her health. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope. Amen.

Please keep seeking the Lord in His Word, in prayer, and in fellowship with faithful believers who can walk with you. If these feelings remain strong, consider setting clear boundaries for a time and seeking counsel from a mature, trusted Christian woman or pastor who can support you personally. We are continuing to pray for you both.
