Prayer to stop addiction to porn and masturbation

We have heard your honest and humble cry to be set free from this long battle with pornography and masturbation, and we stand with you before the throne of grace to seek God's deliverance together in Jesus' name. We know the shame and weariness that can come after so many years of struggling, but we thank God that you have not given up and that you are turning to Him for help, for His mercy endures and His power to deliver is not diminished by time.

The Word of God is clear that sexual intimacy was created by God to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, and that all sexual activity outside of that, including lustful looking and self gratification, falls short of His holy design. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart, and we are exhorted in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Pornography feeds lust and objectifies those made in God's image, and masturbation is so often inseparable from that lust of the heart and mind. We say this not to condemn you, for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, but to lovingly rebuke what has held you captive and to call it what God calls it, so you can fully turn from it in repentance and receive His cleansing. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness as promised in 1 John 1:9.

We want to gently point out that your request asks God for help but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to make sure you know that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true freedom. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we are told there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be saved is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins and rose again, and to call upon His name in repentance and faith. It is by His blood we are forgiven and by His Spirit we are empowered to walk in newness of life. If you have not already placed your full trust in Him for salvation, we urge you to do so today, and if you have, remember to come boldly to God in that precious name every time you pray.

We encourage you with this promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. God will provide the way of escape, but we must choose to take it. That means fleeing, not flirting, with temptation, making no provision for the flesh, removing access to pornography completely, installing filters, keeping devices in open areas, and bringing this struggle into the light with a trusted mature Christian brother or pastor, for James 5:16 tells us to confess our offenses to one another and pray for one another, that we may be healed. We encourage you to renew your mind daily in the Word, to memorize Scripture to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as in 2 Corinthians 10:5, to pray continually, to fast as the Lord leads, and to walk by the Spirit so you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh as in Galatians 5:16. When you fall, do not remain in shame, but quickly confess, receive forgiveness, and get up again, for the righteous may fall seven times and rise again.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we lift up our brother before You and thank You that he has come to You honestly seeking freedom. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ that You forgive him and cleanse him from all unrighteousness, that You create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him as in Psalm 51:10. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of lust and addiction that has bound him for so many years and we ask You to break those chains completely by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Help him to flee every source of temptation and to take the way of escape You faithfully provide. Fill his mind with Your truth, his heart with Your love, and his life with Your presence so that he no longer finds pleasure in what grieves You. Teach him to walk in purity, whether You lead him to a godly marriage in the future or to serve You in singleness with an undivided heart, and let his body be presented as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. Strengthen him when he is weak, surround him with godly accountability and encouragement, and let him know the joy of walking in freedom and victory. We ask all this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, amen.

We appreciate you reaching out so honestly after carrying this for so many years. Wanting to be free and asking God for help takes real courage, especially when shame has built up over time.

We understand how these patterns often start as a way to escape stress or loneliness or to feel some relief, but then they take on a life of their own and leave a person feeling stuck and discouraged. The very shame that follows can make it harder to reach out, which keeps the cycle going. Knowing that can help you have more compassion for yourself as you seek a different path, without excusing the struggle.

You are not alone in this, and reaching out here is an important step. One practical step that helps many is to bring this out of isolation with one safe person. If you have a trusted pastor, counselor or mature believer, consider telling them this week and asking them to check in with you regularly. Many also find it helpful to put a simple barrier in place on devices and to connect with a support group where others understand this battle and can encourage consistency.

We have prayed for you and will keep praying.

Father, in Jesus name we lift our brother to You. Thank You that You see him and care for him. Grant him strength for each day, wisdom to take the next right step, and the encouragement of people who will walk with him. Lead him toward healing and freedom as he seeks You. Amen.

Your honest and humbled confession has been heard, and we thank you for bringing this long and painful struggle into the light. To have been bound for so many years by the habit of pornography and self defilement is a heavy burden, and the Lord sees the sorrow and the shame that it has brought upon you. You are not alone in this battle, and you have done well to ask for prayer and for help from God, for He is the only one who can set the captive free.

Scripture speaks plainly that these sins are not small faults but a power that domineers over a man. They possess and domineer over the spirit of lust, and men return to their crimes as the oxen return to the stream. One man falls in one way and another in another, but all such sins are of one brood and show the same evil power at work. To feel yourself mastered in this way is not a sign that you are beyond hope, but a sign that you need a stronger Master to overcome the strong man within. That stronger One is the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is a blessed overcoming that the believer learns. First we learn something of overcoming evil, and then we learn the sweeter lesson of overcoming Him who is goodness itself by a look of faith. The weapons in this battle are not the strivings of the flesh, for there is nothing to be done but to look. We give an overcoming glance when we look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things. To the world Christ is one who lived long ago and died, but to us He is alive, our familiar Friend, ever present to help. When you are tempted, turn your eyes to Him. Look to Him for forgiveness through His blood, look to Him for strength to flee, look to Him for a new heart that loves purity. A single believing look to Christ has more power to break these chains than a thousand resolutions in your own strength.

Do not be dismayed if the enemy rages as you seek deliverance. It is often the way of the adversary to make his last throw when he sees his captive about to be delivered, as if he would tear and torment most when he is about to be cast out. If the temptation grows fierce as you pray and purpose to be clean, take it as a sign that the Lord is at work to rescue you, and press on in prayer.

We will pray for you, and we urge you to walk in the light in these ways. Confess this sin plainly to God and forsake it, trusting not in your sorrow but in the blood of Christ alone for pardon. Flee from the provision for this sin. Put away the sources of pornography from your hands and your eyes, make no provision for the flesh, and set a guard before your eyes and your private hours. Bring another faithful brother or pastor into your confidence that you may be accountable and prayed for. And fill the mind and heart with Christ, with Scripture, with honest labour and prayer, for an empty heart is soon filled again by the tempter, but a heart filled with Christ has no room for lust.

We pray that the Lord will grant you deep repentance and lively faith in Jesus Christ, that He will wash you and make you clean, that He will give you hatred for this sin and love for holiness, and that He will keep you day by day by His Spirit. May He teach your hands to war against this temptation and your eyes to look ever to Him until the habit is broken and you walk in newness of life.

Take courage, for not one of His sheep shall be lacking. The greedy lion of hell shall not drag one lamb from His hand whom He has redeemed. He is able to keep you and to present you faultless. Look to Him now and keep looking, and He will give you the victory.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We have heard your honest request and we thank you for bringing it into the light before God and before others. It takes humility to confess a struggle that has lasted for years, and God hears those who come to Him with a meek and quiet heart that trembles at His word.

Scripture teaches that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that our bodies are not our own. God created sexual intimacy as a good gift to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. Pornography and masturbation fall outside that design. They do not bring the freedom they promise, but uncleanness and bondage, and they stir up lust that makes the soul like a horse mad with desire instead of forming us into the purity God desires. Because we love you, we cannot affirm or ask God to bless the sin itself, but we can and do ask Him to free you from it.

God does not desire only to punish but to bring amendment and healing. The way forward is not to feed the desire hoping it will be satisfied, for that only strengthens it. The desire is stayed by taking away its fuel and by convincing the mind through the truth of God that this path is empty and destructive. And that change is built little by little, as a house is built stone by stone after the mortar has set. Do not expect all victory at once and then despair. Divide virtue into steps and practice them in order. Learn first to flee from the sources of temptation, to guard your eyes and your thoughts, to turn away the moment lust presents itself, and then to grow in continence, temperance, and self control, writing these upon your soul day by day.

We will pray for you now.

Father, we come through Jesus Christ alone, who shed His blood for the forgiveness of sins. Forgive this dear one for every sin of lust in thought and deed, and cleanse a conscience that longs to be pure. Grant repentance that is real and lasting, and give power by Your Holy Spirit to turn away from pornography and masturbation. Renew the mind by Your Word, take away the unreasonable desire, and teach the heart to find satisfaction in You. Build this life firmly, step by step, and make it an example in purity, in self control, and in faith. Guard the eyes, guard the heart, provide faithful brothers or sisters for honest accountability, and when temptation comes, make a way of escape. Restore joy, give peace to a troubled conscience, and form a life that reflects Your holiness. In the name of Jesus we ask this, Amen.

Do not walk this road alone. Stay daily in the Scriptures, pray honestly when tempted, remove access to what causes you to stumble, and seek a trusted mature believer or pastor who can walk with you, ask you hard questions, and encourage you. If you fall, do not remain in shame, but confess quickly to God, receive His mercy in Christ, and begin again. God is able to make you stand and to finish the work He has begun.
