We have heard your honest and humble cry to be set free from this long battle with pornography and masturbation, and we stand with you before the throne of grace to seek God's deliverance together in Jesus' name. We know the shame and weariness that can come after so many years of struggling, but we thank God that you have not given up and that you are turning to Him for help, for His mercy endures and His power to deliver is not diminished by time.
The Word of God is clear that sexual intimacy was created by God to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, and that all sexual activity outside of that, including lustful looking and self gratification, falls short of His holy design. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart, and we are exhorted in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Pornography feeds lust and objectifies those made in God's image, and masturbation is so often inseparable from that lust of the heart and mind. We say this not to condemn you, for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, but to lovingly rebuke what has held you captive and to call it what God calls it, so you can fully turn from it in repentance and receive His cleansing. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness as promised in 1 John 1:9.
We want to gently point out that your request asks God for help but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to make sure you know that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true freedom. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we are told there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be saved is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for our sins and rose again, and to call upon His name in repentance and faith. It is by His blood we are forgiven and by His Spirit we are empowered to walk in newness of life. If you have not already placed your full trust in Him for salvation, we urge you to do so today, and if you have, remember to come boldly to God in that precious name every time you pray.
We encourage you with this promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. God will provide the way of escape, but we must choose to take it. That means fleeing, not flirting, with temptation, making no provision for the flesh, removing access to pornography completely, installing filters, keeping devices in open areas, and bringing this struggle into the light with a trusted mature Christian brother or pastor, for James 5:16 tells us to confess our offenses to one another and pray for one another, that we may be healed. We encourage you to renew your mind daily in the Word, to memorize Scripture to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as in 2 Corinthians 10:5, to pray continually, to fast as the Lord leads, and to walk by the Spirit so you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh as in Galatians 5:16. When you fall, do not remain in shame, but quickly confess, receive forgiveness, and get up again, for the righteous may fall seven times and rise again.
We pray together for you now.
Father, we lift up our brother before You and thank You that he has come to You honestly seeking freedom. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ that You forgive him and cleanse him from all unrighteousness, that You create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him as in Psalm 51:10. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of lust and addiction that has bound him for so many years and we ask You to break those chains completely by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Help him to flee every source of temptation and to take the way of escape You faithfully provide. Fill his mind with Your truth, his heart with Your love, and his life with Your presence so that he no longer finds pleasure in what grieves You. Teach him to walk in purity, whether You lead him to a godly marriage in the future or to serve You in singleness with an undivided heart, and let his body be presented as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. Strengthen him when he is weak, surround him with godly accountability and encouragement, and let him know the joy of walking in freedom and victory. We ask all this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, amen.
