Silas
Beloved of All
Your honesty before the Lord is precious, and He hears the weariness in your heart. Wanting the constant yearning and the cycle of what ifs and could have beens to finally stop is a good and right prayer, and God wants to answer that cry with His own peace.
Scripture speaks of two kinds of peace that belong to every person who belongs to Jesus. First there is peace with God, which comes when our sins are forgiven and we are no longer at war with Him or running from Him. God has offered a peace treaty to all of us through Jesus Christ, and when we receive it the inward war begins to quiet. Then there is the peace of God, that deep steadiness that guards the heart and mind even when circumstances are painful. The Bible says God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him, because that person trusts in Him, and that Jesus gives a peace not as the world gives, a peace that passes all understanding.
That peace grows as we learn to trust that God is in control and that He ordains peace for His people. It does not come from rehearsing every possible outcome, but from gently turning the mind again and again to Christ, to His character and His promises, and resting there. As you sow peace by choosing to turn to Him in prayer instead of replaying the past, you will reap the fruit of righteousness and a quieter heart. Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers, and that includes making peace within your own heart by the wisdom that comes from above, which is first pure and then peaceable.
Part of that wisdom is learning to let go of what God is allowing to end. When God shows that a path is not His will, trying to keep it alive with artificial supports only prolongs the pain. It is far better to let it die a natural death with dignity and to entrust the outcome to Him. That letting go is also an act of choice. Just as a person must choose to say I will go when God calls, you can choose each day to say I will follow the Lord in this area, even when feelings pull the other way. Feelings may linger for a time, but the choice to trust and obey opens the door for healing.
You mentioned that you had decided not to pray for him anymore and then found yourself praying again. Do not condemn yourself for that struggle. Bring even that to the Lord without shame and ask Him to keep your heart and mind in Christ. As far as it depends on you, live at peace, and that includes being at peace with the past and releasing this person into God's hands.
May the Lord protect your heart today. May He lift the weight of obsession and replace it with confidence that He is before you and will prosper your way as you walk with Him. May His peace, which is stronger than understanding, guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus as you keep your eyes on Him and trust Him for the future He has ordained for you.
Father, I ask in the name of Jesus that You would grant this dear one Your perfect peace. Forgive sins, quiet the inner turmoil, and help her to fix her mind on You. Teach her to release what You are calling her to release and to walk forward in trust. Ordain peace for her and let her know she is fully cared for in Your hands. Amen.
