Prayer to break the chain of addiction to television

I am fasting today from watching TV and asking God to break this addiction that television has over me. I don’t want this addiction to keep drawing me further away from God. I am a Christian, but this television watching every day, all day, has left me feeling numb, and I am slowly drawing further away from God. I am very scared because I want to and need God in my life. Please pray and agree with me for total deliverance. SOS

We hear your cry for deliverance, and we stand with you in agreement before the throne of grace, lifting your struggle to the Lord in the mighty name of Jesus. Your honesty about this addiction and its pull away from God is a powerful first step, one that the Holy Spirit honors. The Word tells us, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). This battle is not yours alone, and the Lord is already making a way for your freedom.

Television in itself is not sinful, but when it consumes our time, dulls our spirits, and replaces our hunger for God’s presence, it becomes an idol. You’ve rightly identified that this habit has left you feeling numb, a spiritual warning sign. Jesus warned, "The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn’t darkness" (Luke 11:34-35). What we fix our eyes on shapes our hearts. The enemy would love nothing more than to keep you distracted, passive, and disconnected from the life-giving presence of God.

We rebuke the spirit of slothfulness and addiction that has taken ground in your life. The Bible says, "Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry" (Colossians 3:5). While television may not seem as overtly sinful as other struggles, anything that competes with God for your devotion is idolatry. We command that idol to be shattered in Jesus’ name! You are not a slave to this habit, you are a child of the Most High, called to walk in freedom.

Your fast today is a powerful act of warfare. Jesus said, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting" (Mark 9:29). Fasting sharpens our spiritual focus, weakens the flesh, and strengthens our dependence on God. As you deny yourself this habit, replace it with something life-giving: prayer, worship, reading Scripture, or serving others. "Therefore put away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, and receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls" (James 1:21). Let God’s Word renew your mind and restore your hunger for Him.

We also encourage you to examine the root of this addiction. Often, habits like this take hold when we’re trying to escape pain, loneliness, or boredom. The enemy loves to offer counterfeit comforts, but Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Bring whatever emptiness you’re trying to fill with television to the Lord. He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of your heart.

Let us pray with you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the powerful name of Jesus, lifting up our brother/sister who is crying out for deliverance from the grip of television addiction. Lord, You see the sincerity of their heart and their desire to draw near to You. We thank You that You are a God who breaks chains and sets captives free. We declare that this addiction has no authority over them, for "if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36).

We break the power of this stronghold in Jesus’ name. We command every spirit of slothfulness, distraction, and idolatry to leave now and never return. Lord, fill the void that television has left with Your presence. Restore their hunger for Your Word, their passion for prayer, and their joy in serving You. Help them to "redeem the time, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:16). Give them wisdom to use their time in ways that honor You and build Your kingdom.

Father, we ask that You would heal any underlying wounds or emptiness that this habit has masked. Pour out Your love and comfort in those places. Surround them with godly accountability and encouragement. Strengthen them in their fast today, and let this be the beginning of a lifelong habit of seeking You first. We pray that their life would be a testimony of Your deliverance, that others would see the change in them and be drawn to You.

We thank You, Lord, that You are faithful to complete the good work You’ve begun in them (Philippians 1:6). May they walk in the freedom Christ died to give them, and may their life bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

You are not alone in this battle. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11), and that power is greater than any addiction. Keep pressing into God, even when it’s hard. Replace the time you would have spent watching television with time in His presence, and watch how He transforms your heart. You are stepping into a new season of freedom, one where your eyes are fixed on Jesus, not on screens. Keep fighting the good fight, and remember: "He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it" (1 Thessalonians 5:24).

We feel your struggle and want you to know that we’re walking this journey with you in prayer. That fast you’re doing today is a powerful step, it shows real determination to break free and draw closer to God. When we feel numb or distracted from His presence, it’s often a sign that something else has taken priority in our hearts, even without us realizing it.

We know this isn’t just about TV, it’s about what that time represents for you. Maybe it’s filling a quiet space that only God can truly satisfy. Jesus promises that when we seek Him first, everything else falls into place. You’re not just fighting a habit; you’re fighting for your heart’s devotion, and God is right there with you in that battle.

Let’s agree together that the chains of this addiction have no hold over you anymore. Your desire to change is evidence of the Holy Spirit already at work in you. Keep filling those moments with Scripture, worship, and honest conversations with God. He’s faithful to meet you there.

Father, we pray in the name of Jesus that You would shatter every distraction that dulls our brother’s/sister’s heart toward You. Break the power of this habit that has kept them passive and numb. Fill the void with Your presence, Your Word, and Your peace. Restore their hunger for You and surround them with encouragement. Give them strength to walk in the freedom You’ve already won for them. Thank You that where the enemy meant harm, You are working all things for good. Help them to see every small victory as proof of Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
