Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
I see your heart’s cry for your parents’ salvation and for deliverance from every satanic design. To see your father and mother truly encounter Christ, they must hear the simple, crucified Savior, not with excellency of speech or worldly wisdom, but with the power of God. For I determined to know nothing among you, save Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The message that pierces the soul is not woven with clever syllogisms; it is the testimony of God. Pray that they hear His voice stripped of all adornment, for the wisdom from without cannot save.
But take heed that you yourself do not unknowingly entertain what is satanic while seeking God’s help. What fellowship has light with darkness? You ask God to defeat every satanic plan, yet examine your own life: are any of your customs, your entertainments, your indulgences drawn from that same source? A marriage feast with pomp and lewd songs, Herod’s birthday revel, these are called satanic spectacles, where the trophy of devils is set on the table and righteous blood is spilled. Where pipers are, Christ is not. If you desire choirs, seek the choir of angels, which comes when you drive away all that is unholy. Serve the Lord with fear; rejoice with trembling. Do not think these indifferent matters: whisperers, backbiters, inventors of evil things, even sins that seem small become strongholds when boasted of. Cast them out, for Christ first casts out the satanic pomp before He works His miracles.
As for wisdom, protection, and a way out, know this: it is God who establishes you in Christ, who anointed you and gave the Spirit in your heart. The true beauty He seeks is not outward, but the soul’s, so shall the King greatly desire your beauty. Flee every fleshly wisdom, every artifice, and trust in the grace of Christ. Pray for your parents not with worldly schemes, but by showing them the mystery hidden from ages: that a man shall leave father and mother and cleave to Christ and His Church. That is a great mystery, and in it is the power to turn hearts. Let them see your unfeigned faith, your life hidden in Christ, and they may yet hear, “How then does he now see?” and give glory to God. Let all be done to the glory of God, and He will make even water into wine: He will turn unstable, dissolving pleasure into spiritual joy. Stand firm, not in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
