Thank you for sharing this sorrow with us. I am so grieved to hear that your grandmother has died, and my heart goes out to you and your family in this painful loss. Losing someone you love brings deep grief, and it is right to bring that sorrow to the Lord.
I understand your desire to ask that she would rest in peace and be forgiven. Because that desire is so tender, I want to answer you with both compassion and truth from Scripture. The Bible teaches that forgiveness and peace with God are offered to us in this life through faith in Jesus Christ alone, who died and rose again so that our sins could be forgiven. Scripture says it is appointed for people to die once and then to face judgment, so the time to receive that gift is while we live. For that reason we do not pray for forgiveness for those who have died as if it could be given after death, but we entrust them into the hands of God, who is both perfectly just and rich in mercy, and who will do what is right. If your grandmother put her trust in Jesus, she is at peace in His presence. If you are unsure of her faith, the most honoring thing we can do is leave her in the care of the Father of mercies, trusting His righteous judgment.
For you and your family, God reveals Himself as the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in our affliction, and He stands by us in the darkest hours to strengthen and encourage us. He does not leave us to face grief in our own strength. The psalmist says the Lord is our light and our salvation and the strength of our lives, so we need not fear, and that the Lord will give strength to His people and bless His people with peace. When our hearts hope in Him, He strengthens our hearts and gives courage.
That comfort is very personal. Those who have walked through great sorrow and have experienced God sustaining them are able to comfort others with the same comfort they received. The Lord knows the ache you feel now, the tears and the weariness that grief brings, and He is able to make even a valley of weeping into a place of refreshment as you lean on Him.
May the Lord draw near to you and your family now. I am praying that He will surround you with His presence, that He will give you courage and strength for each day, that He will comfort your hearts with His peace, and that He will help you to cast all of your sorrow on Him because He cares for you. If you have not already, I encourage you to put your own trust fully in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and for the hope of eternal life, for in Him alone we have true and lasting peace.
