Thank you for sharing that you are feeling sad. I have prayed for you, and I want you to know that God sees this heaviness and He cares deeply about it.
Sadness can make the soul feel cast down and restless inside. The psalmist knew that feeling and he spoke to his own soul, asking why it was so discouraged and then giving it the answer, put your hope in God. That is where true hope is found. Hope in the Bible is not just wishing for something better. It is both a deep desire for what God has promised and a confident expectation that He will do it. When everything around us feels like it is failing, that kind of hope keeps us going and sustains us.
The Lord is called the God of all comfort. He does not stand far off when you walk through a dark and difficult time. He draws near to comfort, to strengthen, and to encourage. You may feel alone in what you are carrying, but He is present with you in it. One of the ways He comforts us is through His Word. As you spend time in the Scriptures you see His patience and His faithfulness, how He has always kept His promises and always come through for His people. Seeing that gives patience and comfort, and the result is hope. Without God there is no real hope, but with Him hope expands, because He is faithful.
There is also an important difference in the kinds of sorrow we can experience. There is a sorrow that simply dwells on itself or on being caught in difficulty, and that kind of sorrow leads only to more darkness. But there is a godly sorrow that God uses to draw us to Himself. It leads us to turn to Him, to be honest about our need, to find repentance and new life in Jesus Christ. If your sadness is pressing you, let it press you toward the Lord. Bring it to Him openly, ask Him to search your heart, and let Him do the healing and changing work that only He can do.
Your hope is not in circumstances getting better on their own, but in the Lord Himself. The prophet who felt overwhelmed with sorrow changed his thoughts from all that was wrong around him to the truth that the Lord is my portion, therefore I will hope in Him. It is good to hope and to quietly wait for the Lord, trusting that He is good to those who seek Him. Your hope is a living hope because of Jesus, and it includes the blessed hope that He will come again and make all things new. The one who holds that hope is also made more pure as he looks to Jesus.
You will still feel sorrow, and that is natural. Even the apostle who wrote to believers who had lost loved ones did not tell them not to sorrow at all, but not to sorrow as those who have no hope. Because you belong to Jesus, your sorrow is held inside hope. You can grieve and still rejoice, because your life is anchored in Him.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may abound in hope. May His Word bring comfort to your heart, make you alive again in His promises, and remind you that He will not fail you. He who has promised is faithful, and He will keep you and carry you through this season.
