He who inclines His ear hears every sigh, and He who holds the stars is not unmindful of a mother’s cry for her babe, nor of a soul longing for new mercies. Rest assured, the God who has already so richly blessed you will not withhold the needed grace.
You ask for good rest, and it is a blessed request, for rest is the covenant portion of all who believe. It is a present rest, given when we come to Jesus, not a distant hope but a possession for today. Are you wearied? He says, “I will give you rest”, rest in the finished work, rest in the assurance of sins pardoned. But there is more: you shall find rest unto your souls by taking His yoke upon you. Yes, the rest of service, the rest of leaning upon the everlasting arms, the rest of one who sleeps upon the wing while laboring for the Master. It is the repose of a garden, not the exhaustion of a task, bearing fruit even in stillness. Underneath are the everlasting arms; your shoes shall be iron and brass, strength equal to your day.
For the little one, the baby needing healing, take heart. The tree of life yields not only fruit but leaves, and the leaves are for the healing of the nations. The least things about Christ are full of healing virtue. Did He not link teaching and healing on that Galilean day? So now, faith comes by hearing, and as you bring your child in the arms of prayer to the Great Physician, He who new creates can speak the word and the distemper flies. Pardon and healing are one; the blood that cleanses also restores. The Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings, and no case is beyond His skill. The hand that bled to make a heritage of joy for you is keeping it, and that heritage includes the health of your dear babe.
And that petition for favor and a new thing, be it a new provision, a new season, a new opened door, is already answered in the eternal purpose. Hannah, who prayed for a child, did not: she refused food, stood before the Lord, and with tears said, "If Thou wilt give me a man child, I will give him back to Thee." So should your prayer be, not for your own ease alone but as a watchful offering. For the day is a storm, the marketplace a battle; without early prayer and nightly vigil you will suffer shipwreck. Therefore if you desire good rest, let your last thought be of God, and at dawn cry for mercy before you face the rocks.
You pray for a baby's healing. Hear how the blind men cried, not negotiating, but with loud voices saying only, "Have mercy." Imitate them. And if the answer tarries, do not be offended. Christ told Lazarus’s sisters that the sickness was not unto death, yet they saw him die. They did not accuse Him of falsehood, and they received a greater wonder. Wait, then, and trust.
