Pray not merely that He would open a door of employment, but that He would remove the heart of stone, cold, hard, grasping after gain, and give you a heart soft toward Him. How can you ask God to open His hand when your own hands scatter His gifts on the lusts of the flesh? The Apostle warns, “Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” He does not forbid care for the body, but care that kindles desire and wastes what is needful. When you pour out your wages for drunkenness and idle company, you do not provide for your flesh; you arm it for war against your soul. You light a furnace and then pray to be delivered from the heat.
Do you not see how the Lord dealt with the multitude? They had been with Him three days, and their provisions were all spent. He did not feed them at once. He let them feel their want, so that they might eagerly accept His work. Your bank accounts run empty, and you are brought low. This is not cruelty, but a gracious healer’s knife, cutting away the fever that makes you rave for earthly promotion. You ask Him to remove the blockages, but you build the blockages yourself. The deadness of Sarah’s womb was an obstacle, yet Abraham believed. His hope was not in schemes or strong drink, but in the God who gives life to the dead.
If you truly desire promotion from the hand of God, then first become faithful in the little that remains. Prune away the excess. Let your one care be to keep your flesh in health for service, not for softness. Spend your industry on the things of the Spirit. The present life is a sleep, and its riches are dream vapors. What profit is it to be promoted in a dream, only to wake in poverty that has no end? Seek the advancement that is immortal: be lifted up in virtue, in mercy, in sober-mindedness. Then, when your heart is cleansed, if some earthly good be needful, He who sees in secret will not delay. But His first work is often to let you hunger, that He may satisfy you with Himself.

Yet notice what often happens when God begins to provide. He does a work in us before He does a work through us. Those heavy burdens and that feeling of being broke can feel like the potter pressing firmly against the clay. The vessel became marred, but instead of discarding it, he worked it again. Right now, you might be on the wheel, and the pressure you feel is God reshaping and preparing you. He chips away at our rough edges, and we often cry out because it hurts. We do not always understand why a particular lump must be worked out, but we are called to submit to that work. For God is working in you because He desires to work through you. He has a plan, and while you cannot see the final shape yet, He knows the end result from the beginning.
When you ask for a "promotion," be careful. There is a worldly hype of promotion that has even crept into the thinking of believers, as if we must promote ourselves or a program to force God's hand. The work of God is accomplished through willing hearts that He has stirred up, not through frantic self-advancement. If you are His, you are not waiting for a mere human title to validate your life. You are waiting on the Lord to put you where He wants you. And that often requires learning to wait quietly and work diligently right where you are. If you are able to work, even a humble job to pay the bills while you wait, do it with all your heart. We are commanded to work with quietness and eat our own bread. It might be a janitor’s job or something far below what you know you are capable of, but such a step is not a step down; it is a step into the place where God can steward your character while He prepares the next door.
The urgent fear of going financially broke is real, but do not let it cripple you into inactivity. The enemy uses mockery and discouragement to hinder the work of God in your life, whispering that you are failing. But remember what happened when the wall was being rebuilt: the people had a mind to work, and when the enemy conspired to fight and hinder that work, they simply returned every man to his work. Go to work. There are jobs out there. You may have to start somewhere that feels insignificant, but God honors diligence. And while you work with your hands, make sure your rest is not in your own striving paycheck. Our ultimate rest is in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Your standing with God is not dependent on a job title or a full bank account. That is the real work of God that you must believe: Jesus finished the work of redemption for you. You cannot add a single thing to it by your efforts or your worrying.
So, as you ask God to remove every blockage, trust that He is the one who placed you on the wheel. Yield yourself to the work of His Holy Spirit right now. The completeness of God’s work means He does not start something He does not intend to finish. He who began a good work in you will continue to perform it.
