prayer of faith

We join you in this holy desire to pray the prayer of faith that the Lord Jesus may heal the sick, and we count it a blessing to stand with you in asking for this gift of faith.

We are reminded of what Scripture teaches us about this kind of praying. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. James 5:14-15. We also take to heart that the effective, earnest prayer of a righteous man is powerfully effective. James 5:16. This shows us that the prayer of faith is not a formula or mere words, but a trusting, believing prayer offered in righteousness through Christ, with hearts fully persuaded that God hears us and is able to do what we ask according to His will.

Jesus Himself taught us, Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them. Mark 11:24. And again, All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. Matthew 21:22. Faith is essential, for without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6. We must ask without doubting, believing that our Lord is both willing and able to heal, while also submitting to His perfect wisdom and timing, for His ways are higher than our ways.

We also cling to the promise of what Christ accomplished for us, that He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. By his wounds you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24. This healing encompasses both soul and body, and we trust in His mercy.

Together we pray. Father in heaven, we come before Your throne of grace in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Healer. We thank You that You are Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals us, and that You have compassion on the sick and suffering. We ask You to increase our faith and teach us to pray the prayer of faith that moves Your hand. Forgive us where our faith has been weak or wavering, and fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may pray according to Your will with boldness and confidence. We lift up every sick one who has been entrusted to us, and those whose names are known to You, and we ask You to lay Your healing hand upon them. Anoint them, restore them, raise them up for Your glory, and if it be sin that has burdened them, grant forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus. Grant wisdom to doctors and caregivers, comfort to families, and let Your peace guard every heart. Help us to remain steadfast in prayer, not giving up, trusting that You hear us when we ask in Jesus name. We ask all this believing You are able, and we submit all outcomes to Your perfect and loving will. In the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Healer we pray, amen.

We appreciate you bringing this burden for the sick before the Lord. Wanting to pray a prayer of faith for others shows real love for your community, and we join you in asking Jesus to help you pray.

We have found it steadying to remember that the prayer of faith is not about getting the words exactly right or working up enough faith in the prayer itself. It is quiet trust in God himself as the source of healing. He is the giver of every good gift, and we can rest in who He is even when we do not know how or when He will answer. Sometimes He uses waiting to draw us closer to Him, so we learn to seek Him more than we seek the answer.

If it would help, you might gather with one or two others for a few unhurried minutes, invite the Holy Spirit to lead, pray simply for those who are ill by name, and then wait quietly together before the Lord. There is no set script to follow, just openness to His presence and His will, holding your requests with open hands.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift those who are sick to You now. We ask for Your mercy and healing according to Your will, for comfort for those who suffer and wisdom for those caring for them. Teach us to pray with humble trust in You and to rest in Your goodness whether answers come quickly or slowly. Amen.

Your longing to pray the prayer of faith for the sick is itself a gracious work of the Holy Spirit in the soul, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. It is well that you turn to the Lord Jesus Christ in this matter, for He is Himself the Word of God sent for the healing of poor sin sick souls, and it is the Word applied by the Holy Spirit that is the means of healing.

Scripture teaches us that the Holy Spirit is given not as a reward of works, but to the hearing of faith. This truth runs like a silver thread through the whole of the Acts of the Apostles. The disciples obeyed the command of the Lord Jesus and waited together in united prayer for the promise of the Father, and the gift was received by the hearing of faith which led them to prayer and waiting. So keep to the hearing of faith. Test all things as goldsmiths test gold, and receive the truth of God as babes drink in milk. Diligently read the Word and be eager to hear it whenever you can, for there the Lord reveals the promises upon which faith must rest.

You ask for faith to heal the sick, and I would have you remember that even the least faith in Jesus is the gift of God and is like precious faith, though it be not like strong faith. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you can do wonders. The Lord acknowledges the faith which we suspect to be little better than unbelief, and the prayer, Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief, is admirable for many of us. Little faith may be sick on board the vessel, but the vessel itself is safe and you will get to shore as surely as great faith will. Yet we should seek that stronger faith which wears the keys of Heaven at its belt, for the Lord can deny nothing to the pleadings of an unstaggering faith. Above all, take the shield of faith, for it must be all of one piece and of Heaven's forging, wrought by the Holy Spirit who works it in the soul of man. It will bear the blows and preserve you from all sorts of enemies when you come before God in prayer.

There is comfort for you in this, that the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and that tree is our Lord Jesus Christ and His salvation. There is enough in Christ for every sin sick sinner. Though the sick soul is full of leprosy, the Savior is full of grace. Put forth your finger and touch the hem of His garment by faith. He is the great conduit Head from whom abundant streams of healing flow down to men below.

Therefore, pray with plainness of speech and humility of spirit, as Jacob prayed. Come upon covenant ground and plead the person and promise of the Lord Jesus Christ, for next to Christ Himself, the great object of faith is the promise of God. If we were more familiar with His promises, we should more speedily get out of that Slough of Despond in which so many flounder. Bring the sick before Him with simple, believing prayer, not ceasing from prayer nor waiting to see signs and wonders, but observing the manifest hand of God and trusting His sovereign will. A true prayer from one who is near unto the gates of death is a prevailing prayer when offered through the Mediator.

Let us pray together. O God of our fathers, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Thou hast sent Thy Son to be Prince and Saviour and hast declared that by His stripes we are healed. We come to Thee not by works of the law but by the hearing of faith, pleading the blood and righteousness of Jesus alone. Grant us, we beseech Thee, the Holy Spirit to work in us a living faith, whether it be as a grain of mustard seed or in greater strength, that we may pray according to Thy will for those who are sick. Lay Thy healing hand upon them, restore them if it be for Thy glory and their good, and above all heal their souls by bringing them to know Christ as their all. Teach us to walk in Him by faith, to receive from Him and to abide in Him, and to offer prayers that prevail through His name. We ask this for His sake alone. Amen.
