Chrysostom
Beloved
The prayer you offer, drawn from the Psalm, begins well by placing the day into God's hands and seeking deliverance from falsehood. Let your life match the words you speak. To ask God to deliver you from snares and lies while your own heart harbors any deceit is a fearful contradiction. For what is a true heart? It is one without hypocrisy, where what is thought and what is said are the same thing. Falsehood between husband and wife, between neighbor and neighbor, this is what breeds enmity. There is nothing so productive of hatred as guile. So when you pray for deliverance from the malicious intentions of others, see to it first that you put away all falsehood yourself. Speak truth with your neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Now, you ask God to shield you and guide your steps, that you not stray, and that your heart may rest in certainty. This certainty is found in believing that what He has said must come to pass. But do not seek a false rest, a mere deliverance from every danger or snare. For see here a great wonder: He does not promise His faithful a life free from the snares of men or the threat of death itself. That would be a small thing. He permits them to face these trials, and in doing so grants them something far greater than mere deliverance. He grants them the power to despise danger and death. To set a soul above malicious intentions, to persuade it to look past the false glory of the world, this is a liberty far greater than any physical protection. The things you think are disgracing and dangerous, even these He is wont to turn to your glory and renown. Remember, the Cross itself, a thing of dreadful aspect, was the very tool of salvation for the whole world. So do not let your heart be fainthearted, for this is not the mark of a true heart and comes from unbelief.
Since you desire to rest in the certainty of His protection, then fix your mind on this unshakeable truth: If God is for us, who can be against us? You ask that His righteousness be your shield. Very well. When your own mind is armed with the memory of His past goodness, His justifying, His glory, the very friendship He has shown you from the beginning, what malicious device can unsettle you? Let no one complain about the dangers from every quarter. Those things are powerless. Instead, think on whatever is true, for vice is the only real falsehood. Think on what is pure, what is honorable, what is lovely to God. Do these things, not just speak of them, and the God of peace shall be with you. This is your true dwelling place, a calm and great safety that no human malice can breach.
