Thank you for sharing your heart and your desire to be a more faithful servant who bears fruit that lasts. That desire itself is pleasing to God, and it is right to bring it before Him.
Scripture teaches that God is like a gardener tending His vineyard. Jesus said He is the true vine and His Father is the gardener. Every branch that bears fruit is cleansed and pruned so it will bear more fruit, and that cleansing comes through His Word. The church and the Word of God are the tools He uses to shape us. Fruit that remains does not come by forcing or by trying to manufacture results. It comes naturally from abiding in Christ, from staying closely connected to Him. That is why the prayer for lasting fruit is so important. God is not looking for a brief show or for leaves without fruit, He is looking for real, abiding character and life that continues. He is glorified when we bear much fruit and that fruit remains, not just for a moment but in love that continues, in faithfulness that endures, and in a life that consistently reflects Him.
That kind of fruit is described as the fruit of the Spirit, and the first of that fruit is love. Out of love comes right judgment and genuine goodness. The fruit of the righteous is like a tree of life to others, and Scripture says that he who wins souls is wise. So to pray for good company and for wise counsel fits perfectly with praying for lasting fruit. You become like those you walk with, and the company you keep will either help or hinder what God wants to grow in you.
The Bible warns that there is no one in a worse place than a person who is wise in his own conceit, even more than a fool. A fool at least may be corrected, but a person who thinks he already knows does not truly seek counsel at all. Many say they want counsel but they only want someone to agree with them. True wisdom is shown when a person listens to counsel. Proverbs says he who listens to counsel is wise, while the way of a fool is right in his own eyes. Scornful people can lead a whole community into trouble, but wise counsel can turn away wrath and spare destruction. God has often used one wise word spoken at the right time to prevent great harm and to bring peace.
Spiritual growth comes through the whole counsel of God in His Word. You are God's garden, and He wants to come and enjoy the fruit of His garden. That means staying in the Word daily, letting it wash and prune you, and surrounding yourself with people who love the truth, who will speak honestly to you, and who themselves are abiding in Christ. Pray for friends who build up a household in love and security, who encourage you toward Christ, and who will tell you the truth even when it is difficult.
It is also right to pray against the powers of darkness, for we do wrestle against spiritual forces. Our confidence is not in repeated phrases but in Christ Himself and in His Word, and in the counsel He provides through His Spirit. God's counsel will stand, and He will accomplish His purpose.
So I join you in prayer. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I ask that You would cause this dear one to abide deeply in Christ, to be cleansed and shaped by Your Word, and to bear fruit that remains for Your glory. Grant wise counsel and place good, godly companions around them who love Your truth and who will help them grow. Give discernment to recognize wise counsel and humility to receive it. Guard them from being wise in their own eyes and from scornful company that leads astray. Let the fruit of the Spirit, especially love, be evident in their life, and make them wise in leading others toward Christ. Protect them from the schemes of the enemy and let Your will be done in their life. I ask this with thanksgiving, trusting Your goodness and Your power to finish the work You have begun. Amen.
