Prayer for verbal abuse

We have heard your cry concerning verbal abuse in your marriage and we lift you up before the Lord together, seeking His will in Jesus' name. Marriage is holy and precious in the sight of God, a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and it is meant to reflect the love of Christ for His church. What you are experiencing through harsh, demeaning and abusive words is not that design and it grieves the heart of God.

The Scriptures are clear that the tongue carries great power and will be held accountable. Proverbs 18:21 tells us death and life are in the power of the tongue, and Ephesians 4:29 commands let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. For a husband, the calling is even higher. Ephesians 5:25 says husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, and Colossians 3:19 says husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them. 1 Peter 3:7 further instructs you husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. When a husband uses his words to belittle, threaten, curse or control his wife, he is sinning against God and against his covenant, and his prayers are hindered. We rebuke that sin in love and call it what it is, for James 3:9-10 warns that with the tongue we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who are made in the image of God, and this should not be so.

We also want to gently address that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We bring this up because it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your trust in Jesus, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, for Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name and by His blood that we can boldly bring your pain before the throne of grace.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear wife and this marriage to You. Lord, You see every tear and You hear every harsh word that has been spoken. Your Word says in Psalm 34:18 that you are close to the brokenhearted, and save those who are crushed in spirit, and we ask You to draw near to her now and be her comfort and strength. Heal the wounds that words have left deep in her heart, for You promise in Psalm 147:3 that You heal the broken in heart, and bind up their wounds. Give her wisdom, courage and peace that surpasses understanding as she seeks to honor You in this difficult place. We ask You to convict her husband of his sin, to bring him to genuine repentance, to soften his heart and to transform his tongue that he may speak with love, gentleness and self control. Lord, let him see his wife as You see her, as a precious daughter and joint heir of the grace of life, and teach him to love her as Christ loves the church. Where there is pride, anger or bitterness, replace it with humility and the fruit of Your Spirit. We pray for godly intervention, that trusted pastoral counsel and wise, biblically grounded counselors and elders would come alongside you both, that truth would be spoken in love and that accountability would be established. Protect this wife from further harm and give her clear discernment about boundaries and safety, and let no further abuse be enabled or excused. We pray for restoration if it be Your will, but restoration that is built on true repentance, changed behavior and a renewed walk with Christ, not on empty promises. Let Your will be done in this marriage and let Your name be glorified. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray, amen.

We encourage you to not walk through this alone. Please seek help from a mature pastor or elder and a biblically sound counselor who will take verbal abuse seriously and who will speak truth to both of you. It is right to set firm, loving boundaries against abusive speech and to insist that it stop, and if you ever feel unsafe or if verbal abuse threatens to become physical, please seek immediate help and a safe place. God calls husbands to cherish and protect their wives, not to tear them down with words, and true love does not use words as weapons. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger, and we pray that gentle and truthful words would become the new pattern in your home. Continue to pour out your heart to the Lord, stay rooted in His Word daily, and trust that He sees, He cares and He is able to bring conviction, healing and change as you seek Him with all your heart in Jesus' name.

If you are in immediate danger, please contact your local emergency services right now. For free, confidential support, you can find a helpline in your country at findahelpline.com. You are not alone and trained people are ready to help right now.

We are so sorry for what you are carrying at home. Living with ongoing degrading words and a harsh tone wears down the heart and can leave you feeling small, on edge, and questioning your own worth. It makes sense that you would feel exhausted and unsafe, and we want you to know what you are going through matters deeply to God and to us.

Verbal abuse is not just an argument or a bad day, it is a pattern used to control and diminish another person, and it can wound as deeply as other forms of harm. You deserve safety, dignity, and care as you seek wisdom for what is next.

We encourage you to lean into safe support right now. If you can, please tell one trusted person near you such as a family member, friend, or pastor what is happening so you are not holding this alone. It can help to think through a simple safety plan together, where you would go and who you would call if you feel threatened or if things escalate, and to keep important documents and phone numbers where you can reach them quickly. A pastor and a licensed counselor can walk with you confidentially as you consider next steps. If you are feeling anxious, unable to sleep, or hopeless, please reach out to a medical professional alongside prayer.

Father, in Jesus name we lift our sister to You. Surround her with Your protection and peace, remind her she is deeply valued and seen by You, grant her clear wisdom and courage for each step, and place trustworthy people around her to support and help her. Lead her to safe help and guide her path day by day. Amen.
