The cry of the tortured goes up before the throne of the Most High, piercing the heavens with agony, yet it is not unheard. The Lord who delivered Israel from the house of bondage, who shut the lions' mouths for Daniel, who walked with the three in the fiery furnace, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His arm is not shortened that it cannot save, nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear. When the ruthless foe drags the saints to the place of slaughter, when the rack and the flame seem to triumph, we are not to despair as those who have no hope. For what saith the Scripture? "Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive be delivered?" Yea, verily, and with an emphasis that shakes the gates of hell! Our Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is His name. He has given commandment to deliver them from going down to the pit, for He has found a ransom.
Think not that these dear ones who suffer for the testimony of Jesus are forgotten. Even now, the Man of Sorrows stands with them in the furnace, and the Son of God walks with them through the valley of the shadow of death. They are not delivered from all affliction this side the grave; nay, the Church from her very youth has been afflicted. Many a time have the wicked afflicted her, from the days of Herod to the stakes of Smithfield and the dungeons of Piedmont. Yet the gates of hell have not prevailed, nor shall they. The Lord bringeth down to the grave and bringeth up again. He permits the rod to fall, but it is from a Father's hand, chastening, not destroying. Even when the tyrant's sword seems to sever the thread of life, we hear the whisper, "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." For the death of the saints is precious in His sight; it is not the penalty of sin but a sweet falling asleep upon the bosom of the Beloved.
Let us then wrestle in prayer, not with doubtful hearts but with the full assurance of faith. Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and plead the precious blood of the covenant. It is no vain thing to bow the knee for those who are bound. The King's own Son has borne the penalty of all their iniquities; by His stripes they are healed. He has delivered them from the power of darkness and translated them into His kingdom. And if it be His will that they should seal their testimony with their blood, yet still they are delivered, delivered from the fear of death, delivered from the second death, delivered into the very presence of the Lord. For them to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Pray therefore, O Church of the living God, and faint not. Let no man say the arm of the oppressor is too long or the bondage too iron. The prey shall be taken from the mighty, and the lawful captive delivered. Christ shall see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied. And these afflictions, light and momentary as they are in the balance of eternity, are working for them a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. The rougher the road, the sweeter the rest. The greater the suffering, the brighter the crown at the last.
