Chrysostom
Humble Servant of All
You tremble at the gathering clouds, yet our Lord Himself taught us to read the sky. These wars, famines, upheavals, they are not the death throes of a world abandoned, but the labor pangs of a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Do you not hear the apostle crying out that we are pressed but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair? The trial descends, but the outcome is withheld by the mighty hand of God, who permits the storm precisely to anchor you more deeply in the uncreated love from which no power, no depth, no created thing can sever you. The pangs are real, but the mother forgets her anguish for joy that a man is born into the world. So it shall be with you: what now feels like a rending of heaven and earth is Christ bringing many sons to glory.
Cling then to the Vine, not with a slack grip, but with all the tenacity of one who knows that apart from Him you can do nothing. You ask for strength to stand before the Son of Man, good. But know this: the strength is given to those who do not merely wait, but who actively watch, who keep the heart from being weighed down with the cares of this life. The one who endures to the end shall be saved. Endurance is not a passive resignation; it is the steadfastness of a soul convinced that the Giver of the birth is also the Finisher of the faith. He has told you all this beforehand so that when it happens, you may believe, not panic.
Do not suppose these tribulations signal God’s absence. Far from it. As I have often said, He tempted Abraham not to learn anything Himself, but to display the patriarch’s virtue for all to see. Your own trials serve the same purpose: they are the furnace in which your faith shines brighter, the wrestling ground where your love is trained to grow strong. And when you ask for daily bread, ask also for a love that does not grow cold. Lawlessness abounds, yes, and many hearts freeze over, but let your heart be warmed at the bundle of myrrh, Christ Himself, who intercedes for you at the right hand of power. He prayed that your faith would not fail; that prayer is stronger than every earthquake.
This is the very mystery of the new creation: you have been born of water and the Spirit, not of perishable seed. But that birth must be guarded. Grace gives the washing; your own earnestness preserves the purity. Do not draw back to carnal reasoning, like Nicodemus, who could not fathom a heavenly generation. Be faithful, that is, commit your greatest blessings to faith’s teaching, not to the weakness of human logic. The Spirit who began this good work in you will bring it to completion as you abide, bear fruit, and strengthen your brethren. You ask to introduce others to Christ’s love: this is the labor of a mother in the gospel. Such cares are sweet, even when they pierce. I myself have said that though another begets, I am yet in travail until Christ be formed in you. So pour out your life for the weak, for the fallen, for the fearful, this is the ministry of reconciliation, the very fragrance of the new creation.
Therefore, let not your heart be troubled. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will mount guard over your heart and mind. The end shall come, and the end is Christ, who is the Yes to every promise. Heaven and earth will indeed pass away, but not His words. You have built your house on that rock. Let the rains descend and the winds blow; you shall not fall, for you are receiving a kingdom unshakable. Rejoice in advance, give thanks in the night, and worship with holy awe, our God is a consuming fire, but to you He is a Father who brings His children through the flood and into the light of day.
