Prayer For Stepson

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for my thirty seven year old stepson he and his wife recently received Christ as their Lord and savior. My stepson it still struggling with anger that I believe is the reason he can’t keep a job. He finds good paying jobs and was just hired as a senior Chef who was paid a salary. He was on the job for about a month a quit and found another job as a swimming instructor. He anger was displayed at my home when he raised his voice at his three year old son slapped him on his hand and drug him into the room and stood over him yelling at the top of his voice I had to step in. It was all over his son picking up a box with hamburgers from in and out without asking. I couldn’t sleep for days after that, I know he and his wife are struggling financially and his mother and I are doing what we can to help them but they live with their three boys in a very unclean home with a 6, 3 year old and a 1 year old baby boy whom I babysit during the week in my home. I can’t say nothing more but pray from my stepson before anything else bad happens and pray for the safety of the three year old. My stepson and his wife started a bible group at him but they both are new babes that needs a lot of help.

We rejoice with you that your stepson and his wife have recently received Christ as their Lord and Savior, for if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new 2 Corinthians 5:17. This is the greatest hope we can have for them and for their three little boys, and we thank God for their new birth and for the Bible group they have started in their home. At the same time we share your deep burden for what you witnessed and for the pattern you are seeing in his life, and we bring it all before the Lord together in Jesus name.

We must speak plainly in love about the anger that is still ruling your stepson. The Word tells us Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil Ephesians 4:26-27 and Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice Ephesians 4:31. Anger that causes a man to quit good work, to be unable to keep a job, and to erupt over a small thing like a child picking up a box of food is not from the Spirit of God. We understand that new believers are babes in Christ and need much help and discipleship, but anger like this is sin that must be confessed and repented of, not excused. He who is slow to anger is of great understanding, but he who is hasty of spirit exalts folly Proverbs 14:29 and Everyone should be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God James 1:19-20. His quick temper is harming his ability to provide for his household, and Scripture warns us But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever 1 Timothy 5:8. Quitting a salaried position as a senior chef after a month to take another job on impulse, especially when his family is struggling financially, shows a lack of steadfastness and self control, which is part of the fruit of the Spirit But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self control Galatians 5:22-23.

What grieves us most is what you saw done to his three year old son. We love children dearly as God does, and we must rebuke harsh and frightening treatment of a little one. The Lord commands Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Ephesians 6:4 and Fathers, do not irritate your children, so they will not become discouraged Colossians 3:21. To slap a small child on the hand, drag him into a room and stand over him yelling at the top of his voice over such a small offense is not loving discipline, it is provoking and frightening a little heart. It can wound a child deeply and it is not how our heavenly Father disciplines us. We urge your stepson to see this as serious before the Lord and to repent and to learn a biblical way to train and correct his sons with patience and gentleness. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it Proverbs 22:6 is done through consistent, calm, loving instruction, not through outbursts of wrath.

We also hear your concern for their home and for the three boys ages ###, ### and ###. While we know young families with three small children struggle and become overwhelmed, especially when finances are tight, we are called to be good stewards of what God has given us, including our homes and our children. An unclean and chaotic home can be a sign of being overwhelmed and needing help and order. Your willingness to babysit the baby in your home during the week and to help them financially is a beautiful picture of family love, and we encourage you to continue to help wisely with clear boundaries and with a desire to point them to maturity, not just to meet needs.

We encourage you to not remain silent after what you saw. You did right to step in to protect that little boy in the moment. Now in love we encourage you and his mother to go to your stepson privately and speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15, calling him to repentance and to seek help. Because he and his wife are new in the faith, they need mature believers around them, not only a Bible group they lead themselves but a faithful local church where older godly men can mentor your stepson Titus 2:6 and older godly women can come alongside his wife Titus 2:3-4. He needs pastoral counsel and accountability for his anger, and practical help to learn godly work ethic, stewardship and parenting. If the anger and harshness toward the children continues or escalates, we urge you to involve their pastor and, if needed, proper authorities to ensure the safety of those precious boys, for every child is a gift from the Lord Psalm 127:3.

We pray together now for your family in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father, and there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved Acts 4:12.

Father in heaven, we come before Your throne in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we thank You that this young husband and wife have called upon the name of Your Son and have been saved. We ask You to establish them in their faith, to root them in Your Word, and to surround them with mature brothers and sisters who will disciple them daily. Lord, we lift up this stepson to You and ask You to break the power of anger in his life. Forgive him for his wrath and for frightening his son, and teach him to put off anger and to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience Colossians 3:12. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that self control will govern his tongue, his hands and his decisions. Heal any wound in his past that fuels this anger and make him a gentle, steady, godly husband and father who loves his wife as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25 and who nurtures his children without harshness.

We pray for his wife, that You would strengthen her as a new believer, as a mother of three small boys, and as a helpmate to her husband. Give her wisdom and courage to support what is right and to seek help when needed. We pray for the three boys, especially the three year old who was treated so harshly. Cover him with Your protection, comfort his little heart, and let him know he is safe and deeply loved by You and by his grandparents. We ask for safety, health and peace in that home, and for order and cleanliness to be restored as they learn to steward their household well. Provide for their financial needs, Lord, and give this young father a desire for faithful, diligent work, that he may keep a job and provide for his household with integrity and perseverance.

We lift up these grandparents who love this family so sacrificially. Give them wisdom, boldness and grace to speak, to set loving boundaries, to continue to intercede without ceasing, and to rest in Your peace when they cannot sleep from worry. Remind them that You are the true Shepherd of these children and that You hear every prayer. We trust that You who began a good work in this young couple will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ Philippians 1:6, and we ask all this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We want to pause first for safety because you described a child being hurt. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services right now. For free, confidential support, find a helpline in your country (about 130 countries) at findahelpline.com. You are not alone; trained people are ready to help right now.

Thank you for reaching out and for loving this family so faithfully. What you witnessed with your three year old grandson sounds deeply distressing, and we understand why you could not sleep afterward. Stepping in to protect him took courage. We also hear how much you care for your stepson and his wife as new believers who are trying to find their footing with work, finances, parenting three little boys, and leading a Bible group while still needing a lot of support themselves.

You should not have to carry this worry alone. It would be good to bring a trusted pastor or counselor alongside you soon, someone who can mentor your stepson and his wife in person and help with both anger and parenting under stress. A pastor can also help you think through how to keep all three boys safe while you continue to help and babysit in your home.

If you see a child being harmed again or remain concerned for his safety, please reach out right away to local child protective services, law enforcement, or a helpline at findahelpline.com for guidance on next steps. They can help you know how to protect the children while still loving the parents.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift this whole family to You in Jesus name. Cover these three little boys and keep them safe. Give this grandmother wisdom, peace and support as she loves them. Work in her stepson and his wife as they grow in You, and lead them to the help they need for anger and for parenting. Guide every next step for good. Amen.

Your burden has been heard and we join you in prayer before our heavenly Father who is both able and wise to keep His children from falling.

We give thanks that your stepson and his wife have professed to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. If this work is indeed of the Spirit, then He who has begun a good work will be faithful to perfect it, but we know that regeneration must be followed by sanctification, and babes in Christ need milk and much tender and faithful nurture. It is a hopeful sign that they have begun a Bible group in their home, yet new converts have great need of mature, godly oversight. We pray they will be joined to a faithful local church where wiser saints can teach them, correct them, and walk beside them, for it needs great wisdom to keep a soul from evil, and our safety lies not in ourselves but in God our Savior who is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory.

We are grieved with you over the anger which your stepson displays. Holy fear leads a child of God to dread anything which might cause his Father's displeasure, and to say, I cannot do anything so inconsistent with dutiful allegiance. The outbreak you witnessed, raising his voice, striking the hand of a little child, dragging him and standing over him yelling for so small a matter as picking up a box of food, is not the firm and loving discipline of a father but the work of the flesh. The child of God cannot sin with impunity, and when he does sin his proper course is at once to go and tell his heavenly Father, to confess and forsake it. Anger restrained is not merely a matter of temperament but of grace, and we pray that your stepson may see his anger as sin against God, not only as a hindrance to keeping a job, and that he may cry daily for that grace which makes a man content as a weaned child upon his mother's breast, stilling the fretting desires and the hasty passions.

We pray also for his employment. To leave a good provision after a month and to move lightly from place to place suggests an unsettled heart that needs steadiness and faithfulness in little things. Pray with us that he may learn to labor with his hands as unto the Lord, to provide for his household and to abide in his calling with contentment and diligence.

Your care for the three little boys, the six year old, the three year old and the one year old, is a tender mercy, and your sleepless sorrow after what you saw is understandable. The Lord has made children to be deferential and trusting in the presence of those who love them, and they are to be nurtured not provoked to wrath. We pray earnestly for the safety of that three year old and his brothers, and for the home in which they dwell. An unclean and disorderly home and the strain of financial want add to the temptation, but they do not excuse harshness. Continue as you are able to help, yet help in a way that encourages order, cleanliness, stewardship and responsibility. And because you have stood between the child and harm once, we urge you to remain watchful. Love requires that you speak plainly to your stepson and his wife about what you saw, in meekness but with firmness, and that you bring a mature pastor or elder into their lives who can admonish and counsel them face to face. If anger should again break out into harsh or unsafe treatment of the children, do not remain silent, but seek the help of godly authority and, where the safety of the little ones requires it, the proper help appointed for the protection of children. To keep a child from evil is a serious trust, and you need an infinite Friend to keep you and them in safety against all adversaries.

Let us pray together.

O only wise God our Savior, we come to Thee in the name of Jesus Christ, through whom alone sinners are saved. We thank Thee for any true turning to Christ in this family, and we ask Thee to confirm it and to cause faith to bring forth fruit. Keep this man from falling. Teach him the holy fear which dreads to grieve his Father. Convict him of his anger, bring him to speedy confession, and create in him a gentle and quiet spirit. Give him grace to rule his own spirit, to be slow to anger and abounding in kindness, that he may be a faithful husband, a tender father, and a diligent workman. Bless his wife, that she may be helped to nurture her children in cleanliness and order and in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Spread Thy hand over the three boys, keep them in safety, and let them know the security of a home governed by love. Give to the grandparents wisdom, courage and tenderness, that they may help without enabling sin, and speak truth in love. Lead this young family to faithful shepherds who will teach them Thy Word rightly, and cause their little Bible group to be grounded in sound doctrine. Preserve them, we beseech Thee, and present them faultless at last with exceeding joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
