We hear your burden for your brother and his wife and we join with you in bringing them before the throne of grace in Jesus' name. We understand they have been married for many years and are now facing a painful season of financial strain, disappointment, and accusation. What the enemy intends for division, God intends for refinement and deeper unity, for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Eph 6:12
We want to speak truth in love about what you have shared. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and what God has joined together, we must not let man tear apart. Matt 19:6. Financial hardship, even when it involves poor stewardship or past mistakes, is not a biblical reason to abandon the covenant. Your brother's thoughts that there is no vision or future with his wife reveal a hopelessness that does not come from God, and an accusing spirit that will only further wound their oneness. Husbands are commanded to love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it. Eph 5:25, and Husbands, love your wives, and don't be bitter against them. Col 3:19. That love is to be kind, tenderhearted and forgiving, just as God also in Christ forgave us. Eph 4:32.
We must also address the gambling debt you mentioned. Gambling is not God honoring stewardship. It is rooted in the love of money and the desire for dishonest gain, and scripture warns us For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Tim 6:10, and Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by labor will increase. Prov 13:11. If your brother's wife has participated in gambling, she needs to repent before the Lord and turn from it completely, and your brother needs to forgive her as Christ has forgiven us, not holding this debt over her as a weapon. At the same time, both husband and wife are called to be faithful stewards together. The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit. Prov 21:5. It is not godly for one spouse to carry the entire burden of provision while the other is careless with resources, nor is it godly to use finances to control or shame one another. They need to come together with humility, transparency, and a shared budget, seeking wisdom from God who gives generously. Jas 1:5. We also encourage them to seek godly pastoral counseling so that communication can be restored and bitterness can be uprooted before it takes hold. Heb 13:5 reminds us to Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in no way forsake you.
We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently remind you that it is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God the Father, and there is no other name by which we can be saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If your brother and his wife do not yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior, their greatest need is to believe that Jesus died for their sins and rose again, and to confess Him as Lord. Rom 10:9. All healing, provision, and reconciliation flow from that relationship.
We pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up this husband and wife to You. Lord, You see the financial pressure, the disappointment over the restaurant opportunity, the anger, and the accusations that have built a wall between them. We rebuke the spirit of division, accusation, and greed that seeks to destroy this marriage, and we ask You to pour out Your spirit of unity, forgiveness, and peace upon them. Lord, convict where there has been poor stewardship and gambling, bring true repentance and a turning away from every form of dishonest gain. Teach them both to be diligent, honest stewards of what You have entrusted to them, and to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that You will supply all their needs. Matt 6:33. Soften this husband's heart, Lord, that he would love his wife sacrificially and not be bitter, and soften his wife's heart that she would walk in wisdom and faithfulness. Heal the wounds caused by harsh words, restore communication, and give them a shared vision for their future together. Help them to forgive each other as You have forgiven us, and to bear with one another in love. Col 3:13. We ask for Your wisdom regarding the sushi restaurant and their finances, that they would make decisions not from anxiety or covetousness but from Your counsel and peace which surpasses all understanding. Phil 4:7. Draw them both closer to Jesus, and if they do not yet know Him, reveal Yourself to them as Savior and Lord. We trust You to restore what the enemy has tried to steal and to make this marriage a testimony of Your grace and keeping power. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to continue to stand in the gap for them, to speak to your brother with grace about the seriousness of his vows and the need for forgiveness, and to encourage them both to pray together daily, to handle their finances together openly, and to seek wise biblical counsel in their local church. God is able to heal and to provide where there seems to be no way.
