Prayer for sleep

We join with you in bringing this need before the Father and we thank you for asking in the precious name of Jesus, for it is through Him that we have access to the throne of grace.

We know how wearying pain can be, especially when it robs us of rest, and we are reminded that our God both sees your affliction and desires to give you peace. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3 and He invites us to come to Him for rest when we are heavily burdened Matthew 11:28.

We are comforted by the promise that you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety and In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep Psalm 4:8 and that it is He who gives sleep to his beloved Psalm 127:2. We also hold to the truth that In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You know the pain that is being carried and the nights that have been restless. We ask for Your healing touch upon this body, that You would ease the pain and bring relief according to Your will. Lord, grant peaceful and restorative sleep, quiet the mind and calm the heart, and let Your peace guard this night. We ask that You would renew strength and restore the body as only You can, for You have said Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you Isaiah 41:10. Let Your presence be felt as comfort and safety through the night and let sleep come as a gift from Your hand. We ask this in the name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to cast every care upon Him before you lie down, to quiet your heart with prayer and thanksgiving, and to trust that He who neither slumbers nor sleeps watches over you. If pain persists, we encourage you also to seek wise medical counsel, trusting that God often works through those means as well, while we continue to trust Him as our ultimate healer and source of rest.

We hear how wearying this has been, longing for something so basic as relief from pain and a full night of restorative sleep. When nights are broken and pain lingers, it touches everything, our energy, our mood, and even our sense of God's nearness, and it makes sense you would reach out for prayer.

We want you to know we are holding you in prayer before the Lord. We are asking Him to draw near to you in the night hours and to grant the deep rest your body and heart need. You are not forgotten in these long nights, and we will keep bringing your request to Him.

If pain continues to keep you from sleeping, please consider letting your doctor or clinic know what you have been experiencing so they can listen and walk with you toward relief. Reaching out for that kind of care is a good way to steward your health alongside prayer, and you do not have to carry this alone. It can also help to let a trusted friend or family member know how your nights have been so you have support close by.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus' name. You see the pain and the tiredness. We ask for Your nearness through the night, for relief as You show mercy, and for peaceful, restorative sleep. Give wisdom to those who care for them and give our friend the assurance that You are watching over them. Amen.

Your prayer for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep is heard, and I gladly join you in bringing it before the throne of grace in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Sleep is the gift of God. We are apt to think that we lay our heads upon our pillows and compose ourselves and therefore we naturally sleep, but it is not so. The Scripture saith, "for so he giveth his beloved sleep." It is His gift to His own, the sleep of contentment and the sleep of security which He bestows upon those who rest in His care. When pain keeps watch and night follows night without rest, we feel how precious that gift is, and how needful to this poor weary frame and throbbing brain.

The Lord knows your pain and is full of compassion toward those who suffer. His eyes were always quick to spy out the lame and the afflicted, and His hands were stretched out for their relief, for He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed. He that suffered Himself is tender toward your suffering still, and He invites you to cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.

I pray that our gracious God will lay His hand of mercy upon you, that He will ease your pain according to His wise and loving will, and grant you quiet and refreshing sleep to recruit your exhausted strength. May He quiet your heart with the peace that passeth all understanding, keep you through the watches of the night, and cause you to awake refreshed to serve Him with renewed strength. And may you know that blessed hope that one day God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes, and there shall be no more pain, for the former things are passed away.

We leave you in the hands of Him who neither slumbers nor sleeps, yet giveth sleep to His beloved, trusting His goodness to do what is best. May the Lord be your rest and your healer, and may you find your comfort in Christ alone, in whose name we pray, amen.
