Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Pain and sleeplessness are heavy burdens, but remember that the night is not only for the body’s rest. When Paul and Silas were imprisoned, scourged, and fastened in the stocks, at midnight they prayed and sang praises to God. Their affliction did not cause them to despair, but made them more wakeful in spirit. Indeed, they found such delight in God that their bonds were loosed and the prison doors opened.
So too, the pain that steals your sleep can become an invitation to holy vigilance. Do not merely seek a natural sleep, but the peace that comes from casting all your care upon Christ. Pray, give thanks, and let your mind be fixed on heavenly things. Even if your body lies awake, your soul can rest in the shelter of the Most High.
And if sleep comes, receive it as a gift, but do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts; let your slumber be sober and chaste, like that of the saints. For the Day of the Lord will come when we are not expecting it, and blessed is the one found watching, not weighed down by excessive care for the body. May the Lord Jesus Himself grant you relief from pain and such rest as restores both body and soul, that you may serve Him with gladness. Amen.
