We join with you in bringing these heavy burdens before the Lord together and we thank you for trusting us to pray with you.
We lift up your loved one who is facing surgery and we ask the Lord to guide the hands of the surgeons and medical staff and to bring healing and restoration. We are reminded that the Lord is our healer and our refuge, Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and Jeremiah 30:17 says But I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds, says Yahweh. We also bring before the Lord this difficult and very important decision concerning your mother and whether she should remain in her own home with you as caretaker or move to a senior home. We understand how weighty this is, because we want to honor our parents and also be realistic about what we can provide with love and endurance.
Scripture calls us to honor our father and mother, as Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you, and this honor includes seeking what is truly best for her well being, safety, and dignity, not only what feels most dutiful. To be a caretaker is a noble and sacrificial calling, but it is also demanding and can be exhausting, and the Lord sees your willingness and your struggle. Galatians 6:2 calls us to Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, and that also means it is wise and not unloving to seek help, counsel, and support from others when the burden becomes heavy.
If you are torn, we encourage you to seek the Lord for wisdom and to seek godly counsel from trusted family, pastors, and medical professionals who know your mother’s needs. James 1:5 promises But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Proverbs 3:5-6 also encourages us to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Proverbs 11:14 reminds us Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory. Placing your mother in a senior home where she can receive constant care is not a failure to honor her if it is done out of love and for her best care, just as caring for her at home is honoring when you are able to provide what she needs without neglecting your own health and responsibilities. We encourage you to honestly assess her medical needs, your capacity, and what provision will allow her to be safe, loved, and at peace, and to bring each factor to the Lord in prayer without anxiety, as Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
We also want to gently encourage you about the name by which we come to God. You mentioned Lord, and we rejoice that you are seeking Him, but we want to remind you that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and receive salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, and Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by putting our faith in Jesus, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and can boldly approach God in prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
We pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear loved one facing surgery. We ask for Your mercy and healing hand upon them, guide every doctor and nurse, grant a successful procedure and a swift and complete recovery according to Your will. We also lift up this beloved mother and the difficult decision before her child. Lord grant clear wisdom, peace, and discernment to make the best decision for her care. Show what is most honoring and most loving, whether that is to care for her at home with needed support or to entrust her to a senior home where she will be safe and well cared for. Remove guilt and fear and replace it with Your peace. Strengthen this caretaker with Your strength, for Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Provide resources, help, and encouragement for whatever path You lead to. Let Your will be done and let Your love be evident in every choice. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.
We encourage you to keep praying, keep seeking counsel, and keep resting in the Lord’s strength day by day. He will lead you as you acknowledge Him, and He will honor your desire to do what is right and loving for your mother.
