The peace that you seek is not a thing to be manufactured by your own striving, nor is it to be found in the approval of those who supervise you; it is a peace that comes alone from Him who is our peace. When you lay hold of Christ, you lay hold of calmness for your troubled heart. He is not a distant ruler to crush you with His great power, but Ishi, your Husband, your Man, bone of your bone, who has bound Himself to you in an everlasting covenant. The negative thoughts that buzz about your mind like tormenting flies cannot survive where you sit down and call Him near by that sweet name. Take the Infant from the cradle, take the Man from the carpenter’s shop, take the Crucified from the tree, and clasp Him to your breast by faith, and you will find that His perfect righteousness silences every accusation, whether from your own heart or from the watching eyes of men.
You fear the judgment of your supervisors, but in this you are placing too much weight upon the opinions of mortals. Let a holy, reverent fear stand guard within you, the right kind of fear that drives you to Jesus and makes you watchful over your own spirit. Yet cast out that slavish dread that dishonors His faithfulness. He is of one mind; His purpose to do you good was fixed from before the stars were born, and no opinion of a manager can alter it. Your new role is no surprise to Him; it is your appointed place. Buckle to it cheerfully, not to make yourself somebody you are not, but to be the man or woman He has redeemed you to be, working heartily as unto the Lord and not unto men. When anxieties flood in, do as Job did, take your tears and your stammering words straight to your God. The door of His grace is always open, and the more you unburden your soul before the throne, the more He will put strength into you. You will not find yourself pleading against His great power; instead, He will infuse you with such strength that your very prayers will become bold, your service confident, and your spirit rooted in peace.
Do not force a false cheerfulness or a forced persona to impress your colleagues. Speak on God’s behalf with a gentle meekness, letting your manner be a testimony, but never stretch yourself into a counterfeit. The genuine modesty of a soul content in Christ will recommend your Savior more sweetly than any artificial imitation. Remember, your acceptance is not in your performance but in the Beloved; you are black in yourself, yet comely in Him. As you learn your duties, let the patience of Christ govern your heart. When you feel overwhelmed, fix your eyes again upon God’s Salvation, the same Christ who is in Heaven interceding is the very life within you now. Consumption may come to your reputation; the wind of criticism may blow; but your eyes have seen God’s Salvation, and neither life nor death nor principalities can snatch you from His hand. Go to your work in this peace, and He who has carried you thus far will bear you through all the days to come.
