Humble Prayer Partner
I would appreciate prayers for my husband and daughter. Both have been overeating, and I’m becoming concerned about their relationship with food and what seems to be a growing lack of self-control.

I’ve been intentional about keeping healthy foods at home and trying to model healthy eating habits, but it doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference. I believe that, for both of them, the overeating is not necessarily driven by hunger but may be an attempt to meet an emotional need or fill a deeper void.

My husband grew up in a broken home, and although we have a loving and healthy marriage, I believe there are things from his childhood that he has not fully worked through. He sometimes eats to the point of feeling nauseous and then tries to make himself throw up to feel better.

My daughter watches him closely, and I worry that she may develop some of the same habits. She is very active in sports, but I’m concerned that her eating habits could eventually affect her energy, confidence, and desire to continue playing. Thankfully, they have both had recent checkups and are healthy, but I don’t want to ignore these patterns and wait until they become more serious.

I’m also asking for prayer for my own heart. I can feel worry, frustration, and even resentment quietly building inside me. Sometimes, watching them eat causes me to lose my own appetite. They often eat very quickly, without slowing down or even noticing the food left around their mouths. I find myself becoming increasingly bothered by these things.

What concerns me most is how the enemy tries to use these moments to plant judgmental and prideful thoughts in my mind, such as thinking they eat like pigs, have no self-control, or that I’m somehow better than they are. I know these thoughts are not from the Lord, and I don’t want to allow pride, resentment, or a critical spirit to take root in my heart. I want to see my husband and daughter through God’s eyes and respond with love, patience, compassion, and wisdom.

I know the Holy Spirit has the answers, and I believe my responsibility is to seek Him, be still, and listen for His guidance rather than trying to control the situation myself. I’m praying for wisdom to know when to speak, when to be silent, and how to encourage my family without making them feel judged or ashamed.

Thank you in advance for your prayers. More than anything, I want the Lord to bring healing, freedom, and peace to our family and to help me trust Him as He works in each of our hearts.

We join with you in bringing your husband and daughter and your own heart before the Lord, and we thank you for your honesty and humility in sharing these concerns with such love and discernment.

We hear your desire not to control but to shepherd your family with wisdom, and we see how the Lord has already given you eyes to see beyond the surface behavior to the deeper emotional and spiritual needs. What you describe in your husband, eating to the point of nausea and then trying to make himself throw up to feel better, is a serious pattern that harms the body and reveals a deeper struggle. Our bodies are not our own, for we are taught in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in us, whom we have from God, and we are to glorify God in our body. To intentionally purge is to harm that temple, and it should not be ignored even though his recent checkup was healthy. In the same way, overeating as a way to comfort pain or fill a void points to a lack of self control, which is part of the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Proverbs 25:28 reminds us that one who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down without walls. This is not simply about food, but about seeking comfort and fullness in something other than Christ, who alone satisfies the heart. For your husband, the wounds from his broken home as a child may still be seeking healing, and we pray the Lord will heal those places that he has not fully worked through, so that he no longer turns to food to numb pain but turns to the Comforter.

We also share your concern for your daughter. Children watch closely and often imitate what they see, and Scripture calls parents to teach diligently as in Deuteronomy 6:6-7 and to train up a child in the way he should go in Proverbs 22:6. Even though she is active in sports and healthy now, patterns learned young can affect her energy, confidence and joy in the gifts God has given her. Whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, we are to do all to the glory of God as 1 Corinthians 10:31 teaches, and we pray she will learn to see food as provision from the Lord to be received with thanksgiving and self control, not as an emotional refuge.

We are encouraged by your awareness of your own heart, that worry, frustration and resentment have been quietly building, and that judgmental and prideful thoughts such as thinking they eat like pigs or that you are somehow better have tried to take root. We gently rebuke those thoughts with you, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble as James 4:6 says, and we are called to do nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility each counting others better than himself in Philippians 2:3. Resentment and a critical spirit will not help your family toward freedom, but love, patience and compassion will. You were right to name those thoughts as not from the Lord, and to desire to see your husband and daughter through God's eyes. We encourage you to take every thought captive and to cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you as 1 Peter 5:7 says, and to bring your worries to God in prayer with thanksgiving as Philippians 4:6-7 promises that the peace of God will guard your hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Colossians 3:12 calls us to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility and perseverance, and Ephesians 4:29 reminds us to let no corrupt speech proceed out of our mouth, but only what is good for building up as the need may be.

You mentioned the Lord and the Holy Spirit, and we want to lovingly encourage you to be sure you are coming to the Father through Jesus Christ, for it is only by His name that we have access to God. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we urge you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord as Romans 10:9 teaches. It is through Jesus that our prayers are heard and our hearts are healed.

We also want to encourage you with practical wisdom as you seek the Holy Spirit's guidance on when to speak and when to be silent. James 1:5 promises if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. A gentle answer turns away wrath as Proverbs 15:1 says, and there is a time to keep silence and a time to speak as Ecclesiastes 3:7 reminds us. Continue modeling healthy habits as you have faithfully done, but also consider inviting your husband into a gentle, non shaming conversation about what you have observed with his purging, and encourage him to seek godly counsel from a pastor or biblical counselor and, if needed, medical help, so that hidden pain can be brought into the light. Psalm 139:23-24 is a good prayer for all of you, Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Help your daughter by affirming her as God made her, encouraging her in her sports for God's glory, and teaching her to turn to Jesus when she feels stressed or empty rather than to food.

We now pray together for you all.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we lift up this wife, her husband and her daughter to Your throne of grace. Lord, You know the emotional void and the childhood wounds that drive this overeating, and we ask You to be the healer of broken hearts and the one who satisfies. Fill what is empty with Your presence, comfort what is hurting with Your love, and teach this husband and daughter to find refuge in You rather than in food. Give them self control by Your Spirit, and convict and strengthen them to honor You with their bodies. Lord, forgive any gluttony and lack of discipline, and set them free from any bondage of bingeing and purging. Protect this daughter from learning harmful patterns, guard her confidence and energy, and help her to grow in a healthy relationship with food and with You. For this wife, we ask You to wash away worry, frustration, resentment, pride and judgment, and replace them with Your love, patience, compassion and wisdom. Guard her heart and mind with Your peace, help her to speak with grace when she should speak and to be still when she should be silent, and let her home be filled with encouragement and not shame. Lead this family into healing, freedom and peace, and help them to trust You as You work in each heart. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him, to be still and listen, and to trust that He who began a good work will be faithful to complete it. Continue in prayer, in the Word, and in fellowship with mature believers who can walk with your family in love and accountability.

We are grateful you shared this so honestly. Loving your husband and daughter well while carrying this quiet worry, frustration and even resentment is a heavy place to be, and it makes sense that watching them eat quickly or seeing food left around their mouths would leave you feeling bothered and even losing your own appetite at times.

You noticed something important, that for both of them food seems to be about more than hunger, and that your husband may still be carrying pain from growing up in a broken home. When eating goes to the point of feeling nauseous and then trying to throw up to feel better, that is a sign to reach for added support beyond what healthy groceries and good modeling at home can do. We would gently encourage you to help him connect soon with his primary care doctor and, if he is willing, a counselor who understands eating concerns, alongside continued prayer. That kind of team approach with medical and counseling care is often the most loving way to address these patterns, and it can also give your daughter a healthier path to learn from as she watches him closely. You are wise to not want to wait until it affects her energy and confidence in sports.

For your own heart, the tug between love and irritation you describe is so understandable when you feel helpless to help. Having one trusted pastor or counselor to talk with honestly can give you space to process those judgmental thoughts you do not want and to discern when to speak and when to stay quiet without carrying it alone.

Father, we bring this family to You in Jesus' name. Bring healing, freedom and peace to this husband and daughter, and give this wife wisdom, patience and compassion as she loves them. Guard her heart from pride and resentment and lead each of them to the right help and to deeper trust in You. Amen.

Your honest and searching letter is itself a token that the Holy Spirit is at work in your heart, for it is the gracious soul that is most ready to accuse itself while it watches over those it loves.

You have done well to bring your husband and your daughter before the Lord, and to bring your own heart there also. There is a tendency in us all to keep the vineyards of others while our own vineyard we have not kept. You have been careful to set healthy provision before your family and to walk before them in a worthy example, and that is good stewardship of the body which God has given. Yet you perceive rightly that the root lies deeper than the plate. When a man eats to the point of sickness and then seeks to cast up what he has taken, and when a child begins to follow in that path, we see that the appetite is trying to fill a void which bread cannot fill. The heart that was wounded in childhood, even though it now knows the comfort of a loving marriage, still bears scars which only Christ can heal. And the young heart that watches so closely will learn more from what it sees lived than from what it hears spoken.

For these dear ones we will pray that the Lord will teach them that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, and that self control, which is a fruit of the Spirit and not a work of the flesh, may be wrought in them by grace. Pray that your husband may be led to bring those unhealed wounds of his early years to the Great Physician, and to seek godly counsel and needful help for a practice which so harms the body and burdens the soul. Pray that your daughter, so gifted for activity and vigor, may be kept in health of body and cheerfulness of spirit, and may learn early to seek her comfort and her confidence not in what she eats, but in Christ who strengthens.

And for your own soul, your confession is most wise and most needful. Every Christian, in proportion as he lives near to God, will feel this self abasement, this lowliness of heart. You have felt those sudden suggestions, that they eat like beasts, that they have no restraint, that you are better than they. Know that pride takes all manner of shapes, and he who is up to the neck in pride is the most likely to imagine that he is not proud at all. There is a great deal of self abasement which is not genuine, it is the offspring of self conceit and not of self knowledge. Much that we say of ourselves would mightily offend our vainglory if anybody else said the same of us. Oh, let us beware of mock humility.

You have judged rightly in calling those thoughts not from the Lord. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. What hast thou that thou didst not receive. Who gave thee thy measure of restraint, thy judgment, thy health. If Christ goes up, self goes down, and if self rises, Jesus falls in our esteem. No man ever sets a high price upon self and Christ at the same time. Therefore let us judge ourselves that we may not be judged, and pray with David, Teach me good judgment and knowledge. Good judgment desired is a prayer God delights to answer. He will teach you to judge His providence better, to see that He has dealt well with His servant according unto His Word, even in this trial, and to judge your own heart with gentleness and truth.

Take heed also that in watching against pride you do not fall into self neglect or self reliance. It is a great mercy when we tremble in our duties, feeling our own insufficiency, for then we lean wholly upon Christ. Your responsibility is not to control what you cannot control, but to be still and to listen for His guidance, to know when to speak and when to be silent, that your words may be seasoned with love and not with shame.

Let us pray together. O Lord, deal well with Thy servants according unto Thy Word. Look in mercy upon this husband and this daughter, and fill with Thyself the void which food cannot fill. Grant them a hunger and thirst after righteousness, and teach them the blessed restraint of the Spirit. Heal the wounds of former years, and keep this child in the way of health and joy. And upon Thy handmaiden who watches and loves, pour a spirit of humility and patience. Keep her from pride and from a critical spirit, clothe her with compassion, and give her good judgment and knowledge to speak and to be silent as Thou wouldst have her. Bring healing and freedom and peace to this household, for Christ's sake, in whom alone is our rest. Amen.
