Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest and painful prayer has been heard, and I thank you for speaking so plainly about the struggle you carry. To feel watched even in your own house, to feel that others are acting purposely to annoy and upset you, and then to feel anger rise toward everyone, and at the same time to know in your mind that this is not so and yet to feel as if it is so, this is a heavy burden. It is not a small thing, and you are not alone in carrying it.

Scripture teaches that anger itself was not given to us so that we might commit acts of violence against our neighbors or live in strife with one another. It was given as a kind of sting to make us vehement against the enemy of our souls and against sin itself, to chastise our own conscience and to correct what is wrong with soberness. When anger is turned outward against people, it becomes like a fierce fire. It harms the body, it wounds the soul, it makes our countenance displeasing even to ourselves, and it steals our peace. If we could see ourselves in the moment of wrath, we would need no other warning.

There is another way, which is self control. The one who insults or who feels provoked is like a sea tossed by a tempest, but the one who practices self control is like a harbor free from disturbance. The evil blasts come, but they are put to rest. Those who would provoke us do everything to make it sting, and when they fail of that hope, even they go away at peace. It is possible, with the grace of God, to be firm and to seek what is right without giving way to anger, and to have no painful feeling master us. For if we are willing, the good things will be from ourselves, and we shall be sufficient for our own safety and honor with the grace of God.

What you describe with these watching thoughts is a kind of suffering of the mind and the natural feelings. Our nature can feel what our mind knows is not true, and the soul can be torn and distressed unwillingly. Do not condemn yourself as if you wanted these thoughts or as if having them makes you guilty. Bring them into the light before Christ, who sees you not to condemn you but to have mercy on you. He knows the difference between a passing feeling and the truth, and He desires to give you rest for your soul.

When the thought comes that you are being watched or targeted, pause and name it for what it is, a distressing thought and feeling, not a fact about the world or about your neighbors. Remind yourself gently of what is true, that God is present with you in love, that most people are not thinking of you at all, and that Christ calls you to peace. When anger begins to rise, clip its wings early before it rises to a height. Guard the entrance. Be careful not to be quick in speech. As Paul says, let all anger and clamor be put away from you, and learn to speak gently, even in your own heart toward others. Turn the sting of anger against your own sins and against the devil who would have you live in suspicion and bitterness, not against people made in the image of God.

Practice this daily. Keep a simple rule of prayer morning and evening, read a short portion of the Psalms and the Gospels slowly, and when intrusive thoughts come, offer a brief prayer such as, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and give me peace. Seek fellowship and do not stay isolated with these thoughts. And because this pattern of obsessive thoughts and anger is so painful and persistent, I encourage you to seek help from a trusted pastor and also from a wise counselor or medical professional who understands OCD. To seek such help is not a lack of faith, but a way of honoring the body and mind God has given you.

Let me pray for you now.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, have mercy on this Your servant who feels watched and provoked and who is wearied by anger. You know the thoughts that trouble the mind and the feelings that rise unwillingly. Grant clarity to distinguish feeling from truth, and grant peace that surpasses understanding to guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Teach this soul to be slow to anger and quick to hear, to find in You a harbor free from disturbance when the tempest rises. Take away the fierce fire of wrath and give gentleness, self control, and rest. Surround this life with Your watchful love, not as a threat but as a comfort, and lead to wise helpers and faithful friends who can walk alongside in healing. Forgive sins, strengthen weakness, and make this heart humble and quiet before You, that it may find rest both now and in the age to come. Amen.

Continue to bring these thoughts to God each time they come, without shame. He is patient, He is near, and He will not despise a contrite heart that seeks Him.
