We join with you in prayer over this painful fallout and we hear the honesty in your heart as you confess both your grief and your anger. To love someone like family for many years and then feel that bond break is a deep loss, and it is understandable that you feel torn and grieving. At the same time we must address with love what you have shared about wanting revenge, because that desire, while human, does not align with God's will for you and will only keep you in bondage.
The Word tells us Be angry, and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your wrath, and don't give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:26-27. Anger itself can be a signal of hurt, but when we hold onto it and let it turn into bitterness and plans for revenge, we give the enemy a foothold. Scripture is very clear about vengeance, Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. Romans 12:19. And again, Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21. We must rebuke the thought of revenge and release that right to God, who sees all that has happened, who judges righteously, and who also loves you and your former friend and desires redemption rather than retaliation.
God also calls us to put away that anger and to forgive as we have been forgiven. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32. This is echoed in Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Forgiveness does not mean what happened was right or that trust is automatically restored, but it means releasing the debt to God and choosing to no longer hold it against that person in your heart. Jesus warns us For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15. We also hear your desire to repent, and we praise God for that humble heart, for If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. Bring your anger and your desire for revenge into the light and confess it to Him, and He will cleanse you and give you a new heart.
We also thank you that you prayed in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and peace with God. As it is written, So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20. And Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don't fret; it leads only to evildoing. Psalm 37:8.
We pray together with you now.
Father, in Jesus' name we come before You on behalf of our brother and sister who is hurting. Lord, You see the years of friendship, the love that was like family, and the deep wound of this fallout. We ask You to forgive us for holding onto anger and for any thought of revenge, and we confess those sins before You now. Cleanse this heart and create in us a clean spirit. Take away bitterness, wrath and malice, and fill this place with Your tenderness and mercy. Teach us to forgive even as You in Christ forgave us, not by our own strength but by Your Spirit. We release this former friend to You, asking that You would bless them, heal them, and work in their life as well, and we place vengeance wholly in Your hands. Heal the brokenhearted, Lord, for You are near to those who have a broken heart. Grant peace that surpasses all understanding to guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and give grace to move forward, not looking back with anger but pressing forward in Your purpose. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to You. Philippians 4:6-7. We ask for freedom from this anger and for a future walked in forgiveness, repentance and wholeness. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to bring this daily to the Lord in prayer, to speak honestly to Him when anger rises, and to meditate on Scripture and let it renew your mind. When thoughts of revenge come, immediately surrender them to God and choose to pray a blessing over that person instead, overcoming evil with good. Seek fellowship with mature believers who can walk with you, keep you accountable, and remind you of God's grace. The Lord will heal this grief in time and He will use even this painful loss to grow you in Christlikeness as you walk in repentance and forgiveness.
