Do not let your heart be troubled over the marks of this world, nor place your ultimate hope in the passing knowledge of books. For what shall it profit a man, if he gain all the learning of the schools and yet forfeit his soul? The Lord, who spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also graciously give us all things needful? Yet He gives not according to our shortsighted desires, but according to His wisdom for our salvation.
Consider: God has already given you the greatest pledge of His love in Christ. If He did not withhold His only Begotten, why do you doubt His care in small matters? Bring your petition before Him, yes, but bring also a life of faith and virtue. Let your son study with diligence as unto the Lord, and pray not merely to pass an earthly exam, but that Christ may be revealed in him, that he may know the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.
I urge you then: hold fast the rejoicing of hope firm to the end. Put away anxious fretting, and instead labor together with God by instilling in your child the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom. If he seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, all these things, even the help in his studies, shall be added unto him. But if his life is not ordered by the commandments, what gain is there in a passing mark? For many who excelled in letters now burn in the unquenchable flame, because they lacked the protection of a holy life.
Pray earnestly, but also act. Let the boy apply himself to his books with discipline, especially to that which is difficult for him, knowing that through patient toil God often forms character. And you, parent, imitate the Lord who stooped low for our salvation: spare no labor, no entreaty, no lowly task for the good of his soul. For a soul is so precious that He gave His only Son for it. Do not think that God is indifferent to your tears; but trust that He will grant what is truly best, whether immediate success or the greater gift of perseverance and humility.
May you all, obtaining right doctrine and a pure life, do all to the glory of God, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
