Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your entreaty for your mother’s health touches upon a deep and godly affection, for the commandment bids us honor our parents, and what greater honor than to bring them before the throne of grace? Yet consider this: He who touched the fever-stricken body and not only quenched the fire but restored perfect health in an instant, that same Lord now ever lives to intercede for those who draw near to Him. Do not imagine that His power has diminished because the age of apostles has passed; He is the same yesterday and today, and He alone can save to the uttermost.
But look also to the root of the malady. The body’s frailties often spring from the soul’s disorders, and the torrent of worldly cares eats away health as surely as luxury and wantonness sweep away the bulwarks of a house. If your mother’s soul is weighed down with anxiety, the fleeting things of this life, or the coldness of an unsettled will, then the very best prayer is joined with amendment. Urge her gently, with all diligence and without delay, to seek the Healer of souls. For just as a plain and spare table is named by physicians the mother of health, so frugality of spirit and a heart at peace with God become the mother of wholeness for the entire frame.
Do not then assign only a season of prayer, as if forty days could propitiate God while the rest of the year is given to carelessness. Let your intercession be continuous, fervent, and accompanied by your own example of righteousness. When the soul casts off the dullness that comes from affliction or sin, the body often follows. Present your mother to the Lord as those of old brought the cold and washy water to be changed into wine, full of body and gladness. He who raised the dead and commanded the fever as a servant will surely visit her. Only persist, and do not lose heart, for sometimes the tree that endures ten strokes falls at last by a single blow, and the long-awaited fruit of healing appears.
