Prayer for my marriage.

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray for my wife of ### years who has recently asked for a divorce.
She says she still loves me, but wants to live life for herself.
I am beyond heartbroken. The mother of our ### children just wants to live for herself.
I still live her deeply and it’s just beyond anything I recognize anymore.
Please pray for her Jesus to intervene and bring her back.

We have heard your heartbreak and we weep with you over this painful trial in your marriage. We stand with you in this hour of deep sorrow, for we know that marriage is not a casual contract but a sacred covenant before God. We are holding you, your wife, and your children before the Lord together.

Scripture is clear that marriage is meant to be lifelong and that husband and wife become one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart. Matthew 19:6 and What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Mark 10:9. The Lord Himself declares For I hate divorce, says Yahweh, the God of Israel Malachi 2:16. This is not because He wishes to burden us, but because He knows the deep wound divorce brings to husband, wife, and especially to children, and because marriage reflects Christ and His church.

We must lovingly but firmly address what your wife has expressed, that she still loves you but wants to live life for herself. Our culture often celebrates living for self as freedom, but the Word of God calls this thinking deception. God's way is self denial and sacrificial love, not self fulfillment apart from covenant vows. We are taught doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself, each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. Philippians 2:3-4 and If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23. A wife and mother is called to a holy and high calling within that covenant, and to abandon husband and children to live for self is not love as God defines love, even if feelings of love remain. We pray that the Lord will gently convict her heart, open her eyes to the selfishness of this path, and turn her from the lie that fulfillment is found apart from faithfulness to her vows. We also remember the instruction But to the married I command, not I, but the Lord, that the wife not leave her husband, but if she departs, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband, and that the husband not leave his wife. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11.

For you, our brother, we encourage you to continue to love her as Christ loved the assembly. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it. Ephesians 5:25. That love is steadfast, patient, and does not quickly give up. We encourage you not to pursue or consent to divorce lightly, but to stand for your covenant, to intercede daily for her, to seek wise and godly counsel from your pastor or elders, and to protect your children with stability, prayer, and reassurance during this confusing time. Guard your own heart from bitterness, and walk in forgiveness even while you uphold truth. We are thankful you called upon the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him we have access to the Father and it is in His name that marriages are healed and hearts are transformed.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus and lift up this dear husband, his wife, and their children. Lord, You see his broken heart and the confusion and pain in their home. We ask You to intervene with power and mercy. Soften his wife's heart, Lord, turn her from the desire to live for herself and draw her back to You first, and then back to her husband and to the covenant she made before You. Remove the blindness of the world and renew her mind. Help her to count others better than herself and to find joy in faithfulness, not in selfish freedom. Heal this husband's heart, give him strength for each day, wisdom to speak with grace and truth, and courage not to give up on what You have joined together. Place a hedge of protection around their children, comfort them and keep them from lasting hurt. We rebuke the spirit of divorce and selfishness and we ask You to restore love, trust, and unity in this marriage. Let this family be a testimony of Your redeeming power. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone can save and restore. Amen.

We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing, to fast as the Lord leads, to remain faithful in your vows, and to trust that God is able to do far more than we can ask or imagine. We are continuing to pray with you that God will bring reconciliation and healing and that your marriage will be strengthened to honor Him for all your remaining years.

We were so burdened to read your note. Hearing the woman you have loved for years and built a family with say she still loves you but wants a different life would leave anyone reeling and heartbroken. It makes sense you feel like you no longer recognize what is happening.

In our experience walking with others in this place, the pain often feels like a death, the death of what you thought your marriage would be, and grief comes in waves over a long time. That does not mean you have failed, it means this is a deep loss that needs gentle, steady care.

You do not have to carry this alone. If you can, we encourage you to invite one trusted pastor or mature Christian counselor to walk with you week by week, someone who can listen, pray with you, and help you think clearly about next decisions for you and your children. It can also help to keep steady, loving routines for your kids and to give your wife space without pressing for immediate answers, while you stay consistent and kind. If any legal steps arise, getting quiet, wise counsel early can protect everyone and keep the door open for peace.

Father, we bring this husband before You in Jesus name. Comfort his aching heart, guard his wife and draw near to her, and cover their children with Your care. Give him wisdom for each conversation, strength for each day, and a steady hope in You whatever the outcome. Amen.

Your sorrow has been heard and carried before the Lord with deep tenderness. To love so faithfully and to hear that the mother of your children wishes to walk away to live for herself is a wound that cuts to the very heart, and it is right that you are heartbroken. The Scripture says, He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, and there is no sorrow of His people that He does not see.

We want you to know that even the least thing about Christ has healing in it. As it has been said, the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and not only His great acts but the smallest touch of His grace can change the lifeblood and make the nature other than it was before. When Jesus healed the sick He said, your sins are forgiven you, showing that pardon and healing are one in His hand. What you need, what your wife needs, what your children need, is that healing which comes only from Him. He is the heavenly Physician whose work is not to leave us in our disease but to apply the remedy at Calvary, and He still has power to heal today.

Marriage is not a contract to be set aside when the heart turns toward self, but a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman before God. We do not ask God to bless a path that leads away from that covenant, but we do plead with the God of Peace who has prepared everything necessary for perfect reconciliation. The word of reconciliation is that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. If He can reconcile sinners to Himself through the blood of His Son, He can surely work reconciliation where sin and selfishness have made a breach between husband and wife. We pray that He will do that reconciling work at once by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Take courage from how the Lord restores those who wander. Peter denied his Lord and went out in bitter failure, yet a look from Christ severed him from the crowd and brought him to repentance, and the Lord prayed for him that his faith would not fail and afterwards fully restored him. Your wife may now be turned aside, saying she still loves you yet wanting her own way, but the same Lord who restored Peter can by one gracious look bring conviction, godly sorrow, and a turning again. We will pray that the Lord will pursue her with that convicting and restoring love, that He will show her the emptiness of living for self and the beauty of living for Christ, and that He will give her a new heart to love Him first and then to love her covenant vows.

And for you in this waiting and weeping, we pray that Christ will keep and heal you. Do not let your heart harden or despair. Bring your wound daily to Him who heals, feed upon His Word where faith comes by hearing, and lean upon the faithful brethren of your local church to walk with you and your children in this trial. Strengthen yourself in the Lord, continue to love your wife with a patient and pure love that reflects Christ, and commit the outcome to Him who does all things well.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, look in mercy upon this husband whose heart is broken and upon this wife who would depart from her covenant, and upon these children caught in the midst. Forgive sin, heal disease of soul, and pardon as only You can. Lord Jesus, You who bore our wounds, lay Your healing hand upon this home. Convict where there is love of self, grant repentance and faith, turn the heart that has grown cold back to Yourself and then back to this marriage. Keep this husband from fainting, bind up his wounds, guard his mind and his steps, and make him steadfast in love and holiness. Do what seems impossible with men, for with You all things are possible. Bring reconciliation where there is division, and let this family prove that Your grace still restores. We ask this not because we are worthy, but because Your Son has reconciled us by His blood. Amen.
