Prayer for my husband on his first chemo today

Let us not cease to entreat the Lord for your husband, that He may grant him strength to endure this treatment and, if it be His will, restore his body to health. For the body is a garment that wears out, but the soul is immortal. Therefore, seek first the healing of the soul, and then the body’s comfort will follow as God sees fit. Faith comes by hearing the word of God, so immerse your household in the Scriptures during this trial. Stand by your husband with gentleness and a quiet spirit, for such a wife is a precious anchor in the storm. Do not let fear drive out hope, but remember that God often uses affliction to draw us closer to Himself and to teach us to rely on His mercy alone. Whether He heals now or later, your husband’s true life is hidden with Christ. Pray without ceasing, and let your example of patient trust speak more loudly than any words. The Lord is near.

The journey your husband begins today with that first chemotherapy treatment is a step into a process, and it is good to remember that God often works through processes. When Jesus healed the blind man who at first saw only dimly, He demonstrated that gradual restoration is still a divine work. The medicine, the body's response, the care of physicians, these are not separate from God's healing hand; they are channels He established. The body itself was designed with remarkable restorative capacities, and any healing that comes, whether in an instant or over many weeks, comes from Him. So as he sits for this treatment, you can see it not as a merely human effort but as a participation in what the Lord is doing.

Strength for this will not be found by looking within. There is a day of adversity that comes to every life, and if our strength is only our own, we will find it too small for what we face. But the promise is that the Lord will give strength to His people. When the bow is too heavy for your arms to draw, the mighty God of Jacob puts His hand over yours and supplies the power. That is where peace comes from: not from the absence of the trial, but from knowing the One who holds you through it. The man whose strength is in the Lord makes even the dry valley of weeping into a place of refreshing, because he is not drawing from his own well.

Let your prayers be anchored first in that relationship. More vital than anything else is that you both stand secure in the salvation that is yours in Christ. Physical healing is a mercy we rightly seek and for which we may trust Him fully, but your souls anchored in His forgiveness is the unshakable foundation. From that place, you need not fear. You can ascribe to God the glory and the strength due His name, and as you do, your husband’s battle with this cancer begins to be viewed in the light of His power, not your own frailty. God does not promise a life without cancer or chemo, but He does promise that His grace is sufficient and His strength is perfected in weakness. May the Lord keep His hand upon your husband today, and may He bless you both with His strength, His peace, and a sense of His nearness as you go from strength to strength.
