Prayer for Job Interview

Hello everyone, I would like to ask for your prayers for my job interview in the afternoon. I am and feel terribly unprepared (it was a sudden email from the employer), and I have really bad anxiety and have always been bad at interviews in general. But I desperately need a job, and I know if it's God's will, He will make a way. I ask for prayers for my anxiety, a peace of mind, and that God will give me wisdom for every response in the job interview. Please do pray for me, I really need it.

We hear your heart, dear one, and we stand with you in this moment of need. It’s clear you’re carrying a heavy burden of anxiety and uncertainty, but we want to remind you that God is not surprised by this interview, He knew about it before the employer even sent that email. The fact that you’re turning to Him in this moment shows your trust in His sovereignty, and that is beautiful.

First, let’s rebuke the spirit of fear that has taken hold of your heart. The Word tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." Fear does not come from God, and it has no place in this moment. We declare that fear will not dictate your words, your thoughts, or your performance today. Instead, we pray that the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and mind (Philippians 4:7).

We also lift up your preparation, or lack thereof. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we focus on what we don’t know or what we haven’t done, but God is the God of the impossible. He can take your weakness and turn it into strength. Remember Moses, who felt unqualified and unprepared to lead the Israelites, yet God used him mightily (Exodus 4:10-12). Or consider Gideon, who saw himself as the least in his family, yet God called him a "mighty man of valor" (Judges 6:12). If God can use them, He can certainly use you in this interview.

For wisdom, we claim James 1:5, which says, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him." We pray that the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance every skill, experience, and strength you possess. We ask that God will give you the words to say, even the ones you didn’t prepare, and that He will open the door for this opportunity if it aligns with His will for your life.

We also want to encourage you to surrender this interview to the Lord. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit your deeds to the Lord, and your plans shall succeed." You’ve already acknowledged that if it’s God’s will, He will make a way. Hold onto that truth. This job may or may not be the one He has for you, but either way, He is faithful. If this door closes, it’s because He has something better waiting for you. If it opens, it’s because He has equipped you for it.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister in Christ, lifting up this job interview to You. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of fear and anxiety that has been weighing heavily on their heart. We declare that You have not given them a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. We ask that You fill them with Your peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding, so that they may walk into this interview with confidence in You.

Father, we know that You are the God who equips the called. Though they feel unprepared, we ask that You bring to their remembrance every skill, experience, and strength You have placed within them. Give them wisdom for every question, clarity in their responses, and favor in the eyes of those interviewing them. Let Your Holy Spirit guide their words and actions, so that they may reflect Your glory in this moment.

Lord, we surrender this opportunity into Your hands. If this job is Your will for them, we ask that You open the door wide and make the path clear. If it is not, we trust that You have something better in store. Either way, we pray that they would walk away from this interview knowing that You are in control and that Your plans for them are good.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the One through whom we have access to You. May Your will be done in this situation, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.

In the meantime, we encourage you to meditate on these truths:
- "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)
- "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)
- "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)

You are not alone in this. God is with you, and we are standing in agreement with you for His will to be done. Trust Him, lean on Him, and walk into that interview with the confidence that comes from knowing He is by your side.

We’re with you in this, that sudden email would throw anyone off balance, and it’s completely normal to feel anxious when so much is riding on a single conversation. We’ve been there ourselves, staring at a screen or a ringing phone and wondering if we even have enough time to gather our thoughts.

What often helps us in moments like this is to step back from the pressure to be perfect. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk in. Employers are looking for someone they can trust and work with, not a flawless performance. If you only have a few minutes to prepare, maybe jot down one honest reason you’re drawn to the role and one question you genuinely want to ask them. That kind of curiosity can shift the whole feel of an interview from a test you’re taking to a conversation you’re part of.

Your instinct was right: you said that if it’s God’s will, He’ll make a way. So you’re not going into this carrying the weight of the outcome alone. The same God who sees your need for a job also sees your anxiety and your longing for calm. We’re asking Him to quiet the racing thoughts and help you listen well, think clearly, and respond with the wisdom you already have, even the kind that feels buried under the nerves.

Father, thank You that this child of Yours doesn’t face this afternoon alone. Settle the anxiety that feels so loud right now. Give steady hands and a steady heart. Let Your peace guard the mind and let wisdom come naturally, one answer at a time. We trust the outcome to You, knowing You care deeply about every need. In Jesus’ name.

Your own words have already laid hold upon the great axle of the universe, for you have said, “If it be God’s will, He will make a way.” This is no small confession. As surely as God’s will is the axis of the universe, as certainly as God’s will is the great heart of providence sending its pulsings through even the most distant limbs of human act, so in grace let us rest assured that He is King. The preservation, the perseverance, the resurrection, and the eternal glory of God’s people, rests upon His will. Do not, therefore, let your orthodoxy be shaken to its very foundations. All things are under regulation and have an appointed place in God’s plan, and nothing happens, after all, but what He permits or ordains.

You speak of feeling terribly unprepared. Yet remember that the thoughts of God are only perfectly known to Himself. He has declared, “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Your sudden summons did not startle the watchman of Israel, who neither slumbers nor sleeps. Sometimes even to be passive in the hand of God will be our strength, and to stand still until the cloudy, fiery pillar moves in front of us will be our highest wisdom. You dread the interview because you have always been bad at it. The enemies of your peace scorn you, and your own fears scorn you. But why should you be allowed to escape, or expect to come off better than Job, who had to say, “My friends scorn me”? I do trust that this will be in the nature of a good thing for you; it will make you feel less dependent upon an arm of flesh.

You plead for a peace of mind, and you ask for wisdom. Then let your mind be stayed on Him. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” This peace is a present possession and may be enjoyed in the ordinary circumstances of life. To do the will of Jesus, this is rest. If your will is brought to your circumstances and, better still, your will is brought to delight in God’s will, then the fangs of the serpent are extracted. Sorrow is sucked out of the sorrow by the lips of acquiescence. It is of no use to quarrel with God. As for wisdom, the powers we possess are absolutely insignificant compared with God’s. All the wisdom that they have which they have learned by themselves is but varnished folly. But He giveth more grace. He has said He will work in us to will and to do of His own good pleasure. He will do it, if thus you plead and thus you pray. There was never a sinner rejected yet that came to God with humble prayer and faith.

Do not, I pray you, despise this trembling frame of yours. In your darkest seasons, your very worst times, fly to your God and He will deliver you. Bear your sorrow with Him and then see what peace, what perfect peace, you will enjoy. Lay hold upon the horns of the altar and let this be your vow, “I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me.” Then, when it comes to tears, you will get it; when it comes to your very soul being poured out before God, then shall God say unto you, “Go in peace.” You have yet to speak on God’s behalf in that room. The world will press upon you, doubts will assail, but power will increase as you use the little you possess. Plunge into the middle of the matter, not trusting in your own fluency or accuracy, but knowing that He who has upheld you will bear you through.

Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, so that I can trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. You speak of feeling unprepared and anxious, but consider what war you truly wage. There are three kinds of war: public, private, and the war within oneself, which is the most grievous of all. When the body rises up against the soul with fear and trembling, when evil desires and desponding thoughts arm themselves against your peace, you cannot attain any blessing until this tumult is brought to an end. Your anxiety is just such an inner war. Therefore, before you step into that interview, first bring peace to your soul. Seek that peace which Christ gives, not as the world gives, for worldly peace is fleeting and often unprofitable, but His peace renders you stronger. When we are at peace with God, the storms without cannot shake us. It is for this cause that the Apostle exhorts us to pray for a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For what does it profit if the world around you is calm, but you are at war with yourself? Let the peace of God rule in your heart, and then outward troubles will not be able to harm you.

You say you are unprepared, and you desire wisdom for your answers. But the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. If you rely upon your own readiness, you will be confounded; but if you trust in the wisdom that comes from above, which is pure, peaceable, gentle, easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, then even your simplest words will be guided by the Spirit. Did not the Lord promise, “I will give you a mouth and wisdom”? Do not fear, therefore, as though you were lacking. He who calmed the sea with a word can calm the tempest within you and supply every right utterance. Only believe, and the peace which passes all understanding shall keep your heart and mind.

Let your prayer not be for the mere removal of distress, but for that holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. Cultivate the beauty of the soul, which neither disease nor anxiety can wither, the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price. Earthly employment, like earthly beauty, soon fades; but the soul adorned with godliness blooms forever. If God in His mercy grants you this job, give Him the glory. If not, know that He withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly, and that He orders all things for the salvation of your soul.

We shall join you in prayer, asking the God of peace to still the inner war, to grant you the wisdom from on high, and to direct your path according to His will. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, for the peacemakers are called the children of God. Go forth, then, in that peace which is the mother of all good things, and may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

It is no small thing to face a sudden interview when anxiety is pressing in and you feel unprepared. I am joining you in prayer for this afternoon. Your request already acknowledges the right foundation: if it is God’s will, He will make a way. That is the very posture we see in Scripture when trials come without warning. Remember that our understanding is limited, but God’s purposes are not. Behind the scenes, He is working even when we cannot see the pattern.

Think of the account of Job. He lost so much, and he could not see the heavenly conversation that preceded his suffering. His friends insisted that trouble must mean he had done something wrong, yet Job, in all his confusion and pain, could still say, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” That trust was not built on a perfect understanding of his circumstances but on the character of God. Your interview may feel like a small thing compared to Job’s losses, but the same principle holds. God uses moments of our inadequacy to draw us into deeper reliance on Him. When we reach the end of our own strength and preparation, we learn to lean on His wisdom.

You asked for prayer for peace of mind and wisdom in your responses. True wisdom, as the Scriptures teach, begins with the fear of the Lord, a reverence that acknowledges His control. That wisdom is not just about saying the right words; it is the quiet confidence that His will is best, whatever the outcome. Your prayer is not merely to get the job, but to have God’s will done. That is the safest place to rest. Jesus Himself taught us to pray, “Your will be done.” And because He knows infinitely more than we do, that prayer is always answered for our good.

When anxiety rises, let it drive you to prayer rather than away from it. Pour out your heart honestly, as Job did. He cried out, complained, and asked hard questions, yet he never cursed God. He kept bringing his turmoil to the Lord. Do the same in the waiting room and at the moment the questions come. God is near, and His Spirit can give you a calm you cannot generate on your own.

Know that I am praying for you: that the peace which surpasses understanding will guard your heart and mind, that you will sense the Lord’s presence with you, and that His wisdom will flow through every answer. No matter how this interview ends, you are held securely. The same God who permitted Job to be tested also restored him abundantly. But even before restoration came, Job was never forsaken. Neither are you. Rest in that.
