You ask prayer that you quickly sell your guitar, if it be God’s will. But pause and consider: is this “if” a true yielding, or a mere form of speech while your heart secretly says, “I will sell it, and quickly too”? How many say, “If the Lord will,” yet in their souls they have already proposed and disposed, as though the wheels of providence must turn at their bidding. The merchant who boasts, “We will buy and we will sell and get gain,” has forgotten that he cannot so much as breathe without divine consent. Take heed lest your request become that of a man who feels he can do as he likes, and that all things must fall out as he desires.
Yet there is a holy boldness that may pray, “Father, I will,” when it knows its will is swallowed up in God’s. The sure way to have your way is when your way is God’s way. Therefore, search your heart. Why do you wish to sell this guitar? Can you say, “I will not sell unless I can glorify God by selling; I will not wish for the gain unless it promotes His will”? If you can make this your true aim, that whether you keep it or part with it, Christ may be magnified, then you may ask with confidence. And if the sale delays, remember that God’s denials are often veiled blessings. His promises may tarry, but they never fail. The Lord will not cast off forever; He knows when the market is best and when your soul is ready for the answer.
Above all, let your chief prayer be, “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” The true child bends before his Father’s will gladly, saying, “I would like this, but if my Father forbids it, then I do not want it.” Lay your request at the mercy seat, but leave it there without snatching it back. He who numbers the hairs of your head will not withhold any good thing from you. If it be good for you and for His glory that the guitar be sold, it shall go swiftly. If not, may you have grace to sing His praises with it or without it, for your best profit lies in doing His will.
