Many a time has the failure of our own devices driven us to cast ourselves wholly upon the Lord. He allows us to be thwarted that we may learn to wait on Him, for His blessing alone makes rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it. I do join my prayer with yours that this present attempt may succeed, yet far more do I plead that you may be kept from all sullen despair and taught to kiss the hand that has withheld earthly gain. The disappointment of your hopes is not the withdrawal of His love. Remember Job: he was stripped of all, and his friends counted him a hypocrite, yet “in all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.” God upheld him, and he came forth from the furnace doubly blessed. If you are truly the Lord’s, His purpose towards you is ever one of fatherly wisdom. The righteous shall hold on his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
The text you have chosen, the civil examination, is but a temporal matter. Yet be not careless in preparation; industry is a duty, and prayer must not replace diligence. Still, rest your heart’s confidence elsewhere. He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ. That is a sweeter security than any government appointment. The life imparted at regeneration is imperishable, and the promise stands, “They shall not depart from Me.” Let that anchor hold you when the waves of failure break over your soul. Do not think that God’s favour is measured by success in these contests. You have already shown the very perseverance that Scripture commends, and I urge you not to abandon it now. The Canaanite woman received nothing at first except a word that seemed to close every door, yet she pressed on until the Lord Himself marveled at her faith. The widow with her repeated pleas wore down the unjust judge. The friend at midnight obtained bread not by friendship but by importunity. So it is with you: do not let past failures become a reason for despair, but rather a spur to more earnest prayer and preparation.
Yet do not limit your prayer to a few moments or treat it as a last resort. Pray without ceasing, not only when you open your books but in all the quiet spaces of the day. When you rise, when you eat, when you lay your head down, lift your heart and ask boldly. Our Lord asked the paralytic, “Wilt thou be made whole?” not because He did not know, but to draw out perseverance and desire. Let your desire be like that man’s, who waited thirty-eight years yet did not give up.
But as you ask, examine your life as well. We often seek God’s help while clinging to things that drive away His grace, anger, envy, careless living. You prepare for an earthly post, but do not neglect the preparation of your soul. Even a single sin unrepented can block the ear of heaven, and much more a careless pattern of life. Do not be like those who receive the mysteries unworthily and wonder why their prayers seem unanswered. Approach with humility, confessing your failures both in exams and in conduct, and let your daily repentance give wings to your petitions.
I will pray that God grants you success according to His will, but pray also that if success is delayed, you may gain something far greater: a heart trained to trust, a character refined by waiting, and the boldness that comes from knowing that even loss becomes gain when we bless the Lord in all circumstances. Stand in this confidence, and let no failure drive you to despair or to harsh words against His providence. Go forward now, study with diligence, pray with constancy, and leave the outcome to Him who knows how to give good gifts to His children.
