Your prayer breathes a true and humble faith, and I thank God with you for putting it upon your heart. To ask that His goodness may shine through your thoughts and words and actions is to ask for that which He delights to give, for His glory lies in His goodness, and when Moses prayed, show me Thy glory, the Lord answered, I will make all My goodness pass before thee.
You ask to see His goodness today, and this is the very rule of grace for the believer, not to see in order to believe, but to believe in order to see. Faith is infallibly persuaded of God's goodness here, in this present life, in this day's trials and duties, and she expects clearly to see that goodness here. It is this expectation and belief which sustains the soul of the tried believer, lest he faint. Though doubts arise and providences seem dark, we must reply, it must be right, for we have three firm grounds of confidence, God's sovereignty, Christ's sacrifice, and God's immutability, and He abides the same forever.
Remember also that God's goodness to us is not merely a wish that He thinks kindly toward us, but a beneficence, a good doing. He loads us with benefits, not a little of His goodness, but much, very much, until it becomes a load, and He daily bears our burdens. You have been as one who sits daily at the King's table, and His exchequer has never been exhausted. Yet this goodness is meant to lead us to repentance and to closer walking with Him, that we should render good for good and not forget the hand that feeds us.
You never see His goodness truly till you get into Christ, the cleft of the Rock, where His glory and His sovereignty are seen aright. There, in Christ, His wisdom is your guidance, His love your perpetual shield, and His goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life.
So I join my prayer with yours, that the Lord would clear away your doubts, guide your steps, and make His love so evident in you that others may see His glory. May He keep you from fainting, establish your heart to believe that you shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, and cause your life this day to declare His wondrous works, through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name every blessing comes. Amen.
