Prayer for Discernment of My Destiny Partner

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Heavenly Father, guide me to recognize my destiny partner according to Your will. Give me discernment to see beyond emotions and appearances, and wisdom to recognize godly character, purpose, love, and peace. Let elders dream dreams and let young people prophesy concerning the relationships You are establishing in my life. Confirm what is from You and remove confusion. “Your sons and daughters will prophesy… your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” — Joel 2:28 In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

We join with you in prayer for wisdom and discernment as you seek the Lord's will for a godly spouse, and we thank you for asking in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is by His name we are saved.

We hear your desire to see beyond emotions and appearances and to recognize godly character, purpose, love and peace, and this desire honors God. We want to gently encourage you in your language and understanding, for Scripture does not speak of a destiny partner but of a husband or wife in holy marriage, which God ordained from the beginning as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh Genesis 2:24. We strongly endorse marriage as God intends it, and we encourage you to view any courtship not as a casual partnership or prolonged boyfriend and girlfriend relationship, but as purposeful courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer who loves Jesus.

We also want to lovingly bring clarity to the verse you quoted, Joel 2:28 It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. This beautiful promise speaks of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all of God's people, and while God does still speak and guide today, His primary way of giving discernment for marriage is not through chasing dreams, visions or mystical feelings alone, but through His Word, through prayer, through the peace He gives, and through wise godly counsel. We are called to test all things against Scripture and not be led by emotions alone, for the heart can deceive us. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him James 1:5. And for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace 1 Corinthians 14:33, so if there is confusion or pressure, that is not from Him.

As you seek discernment, we encourage you to look for clear biblical marks. Is this person a born again believer in Jesus Christ, for we are commanded Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity Or what fellowship has light with darkness 2 Corinthians 6:14. Does this person display the fruit of the Spirit, faithfulness, purity and a desire to honor God with their body, for this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4. Sex before or outside of marriage is fornication and if involving a married person is adultery, and God calls His children to flee from it and to keep the marriage bed pure, so any courtship that honors Him will be marked by purity and self control until marriage. We also encourage you to invite the counsel of mature believers, pastors and family who walk with the Lord, for wisdom is found in a multitude of counselors.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus and lift up this dear one to You. We ask that You give abundant wisdom and spiritual discernment, that You would remove all confusion and replace it with Your perfect peace. Guide every step and make the path straight, and help our friend to delight in You above all else, trusting that You will give the desires of the heart as they align with Your will Psalm 37:4. If it is Your will for marriage, prepare both hearts and bring together in Your perfect timing a godly spouse of Your choosing, a man or woman who loves You first, who is equally yoked in faith and who will walk together in unity, for how can two walk together unless they have agreed Amos 3:3. Guard this life from counterfeits, from emotional traps and from appearances that do not reflect character, and establish a courtship that is pure, patient and Christ centered, leading if You will to a holy marriage that glorifies You. We ask that You confirm Your will through Your Word, through Your Spirit and through godly counsel, and that You would be glorified in this story. We pray all this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We are thankful you brought this longing to the Lord so openly. Wanting clarity beyond emotion and appearance, and looking for steady character, purpose, love and peace, shows a heart that wants to follow Him well.

In our experience discernment grows more through time and quiet faithfulness than through a single moment. Feelings can be strong and sincere and still not tell the whole story, so it helps to watch for consistent fruit over weeks and months, how someone lives when no one is impressing anyone, how they handle disappointment, how they speak about others, and whether being around them brings a settled peace rather than constant confusion or pressure.

One practical step that often helps is to not carry this question alone. Consider inviting one or two mature believers who know you well to walk with you in this season, people you trust to be honest and who can observe with you, ask good questions, and pray with you as things unfold. Writing down what you are noticing and bringing those notes to those conversations can also make it easier to see patterns clearly.

Father, we lift our friend to You and ask for Your gentle guidance. Quiet confusion and make Your way clear in Your timing. Give wisdom to recognize what is good and true, and surround them with trustworthy counsel and peace as they wait on You. Lead them step by step as they seek You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your prayer for wisdom and discernment in this weighty matter is itself a sign of grace at work, for wisdom is man's true path, the compass by which he is to steer across the trackless waste of life. Without it we are as the wild ass's colt, running here and there and wasting strength which might be profitably employed, but with it we are made to stand near to God, for Christ Himself is the wisdom of God and His gospel is the highest of all sciences.

You ask to see beyond emotions and appearances, and this is to ask well. There is not much wisdom in man's own judgment, and we never encounter a difficulty but we must resolve it by appealing to the wisdom of God, and never meet with opposition but what we overcome it by leaning upon the power of God. The price of this wisdom is above rubies, and it is not found in fleeting feeling or outward show, but in Christ, who planned the way of salvation and who laid the foundations of all that is good. From Him comes that godly sincerity which looks to the Lord and not to self, and that godly fear which brings a goodly consequence.

Concerning marriage, remember what the Word teaches, that it is a holy estate ordained of God. It is not a relationship of birth, but of choice on each side, and it is cemented by mutual love, so that in a true marriage the two become one. As it is written, it is the covenant of one man and one woman for life, a reflection of the marriage of the Lamb to His Church. Therefore seek not merely one who pleases the eye or stirs the affections for a season, but one whose life shows the fruit of faith and obedience to the Lord, whose character is formed by that Incarnate Wisdom who speaks to us out of the Word of God. Take counsel also from the godly ones who have gone before you, for the advice of wise and holy lives is as precious treasure from the heavenly hills, and you who have seen the holy and happy lives of Christian friends and parents will be wise to pause before you deviate to the right or to the left from their godly counsel.

The prophet Joel spoke of sons and daughters prophesying and old men dreaming dreams when the Spirit should be poured out, and this promise is fulfilled in Christ, who gives His Spirit to lead His people into all truth through the Scriptures. Seek His confirmation not in confusion or in mere impressions, but in the clear light of His Word, in prayer, in the peace which belongs to those whose trust is in God, and in the agreement of godly counsel.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, through whom alone is salvation, we ask Thee to grant this seeking heart true wisdom. Thou art good and Thy will is always best, let it be done in this life as it is in heaven. Give discernment to see beyond emotion and appearance, and to recognize godly character, true purpose, pure love and the peace that comes from Thee. Remove confusion and establish what is of Thee. Lead according to Thy Word, by Thy Spirit, and by the counsel of those who fear Thee, that any union formed may be according to Thy holy ordinance of marriage, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, entered in faith and kept in love for Thy glory. Confirm what is from Thy hand and gently close the way that is not of Thee. We ask for a heart that trusts in Thee and leans not to its own understanding. In Jesus mighty name, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer for discernment reflects a sincere desire to honor God, and that desire itself is a good beginning. Scripture teaches that marriage is honorable and pure, a bond ordained by God, and that holiness is shown in chaste and orderly living, whether in singleness with undistracted devotion to the Lord or in marriage through faithfulness to one spouse. It is not marriage itself that hinders devotion, but the purpose of the heart that may use even good things poorly, so wisdom is needed to use this good gift with moderation and reverence.

The wisdom you need is not the wisdom of this world which ends in this life and often calls foolishness wisdom, but the wisdom of God which is taught among those who are mature and is revealed through His Word and Spirit. That wisdom helps you look beyond emotion and appearance to see character, faith, and purpose. Godly character is shown over time in reverence for Christ, self control, honesty, kindness, diligence in good works, and perseverance in prayer, not in fleeting feelings or outward charm.

You mentioned Joel 2:28 about sons and daughters prophesying and old men dreaming dreams. That promise speaks of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit so that people would declare the mighty works of God and come to salvation through Christ alone. It is not a promise that God will guide every personal decision through dramatic dreams or visions about relationships. God does guide, but He does so primarily through Scripture, through the counsel of mature believers, through prayer, and through observing the proven character of a person in ordinary life. Any dream, impression, or word should be tested carefully against Scripture and not followed if it leads away from what God has already clearly said.

Therefore seek discernment in these practical ways. Stay rooted in Scripture and in prayer, remain in fellowship with your church so that pastors and older, trusted believers can speak honestly into your life, guard purity by keeping sex and living together within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and look for a person who loves Christ above all, who keeps commitments, who lives peaceably with others, and who desires to build a home marked by faithfulness, chasteness, and order rather than vanity or indulgence. Do not rush, and do not be driven by pressure or passion, but let time and community reveal what is steady and true. If confusion remains, it is often a sign to wait, to pray more, and to seek further counsel rather than to press forward.

We will pray with you.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that You give wisdom generously to those who ask. Grant to this one a clear mind and a pure heart, that he or she may discern Your will and not be led by emotion or appearance alone. Teach what is holy and what is honorable, and help to recognize godly character, true love, and lasting peace that come from walking with You. Remove confusion and grant patience to wait for Your timing. Keep this life pure and devoted to You in singleness, and if it is Your will to lead into marriage, guide to a spouse who will be a faithful companion in a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, faithful to You and to Your Word. Confirm what is from You through Scripture and wise counsel, and turn the heart away from what is not. In Jesus mighty name, Amen.
