Your love for your daughter and your care in bringing her before the Lord is beautiful, and God hears these prayers. This kind of transition is one of the biggest a young person can face, and it is completely understandable that she feels overwhelmed being away from home for the first time.
A lot of what she is feeling comes from the pressure of so many changes at once. New living situations, new teammates and friendships to build, academic and athletic demands, and distance in important relationships can create real anxiety and a sense of being trapped or unsettled. Scripture shows us that when our minds are focused mainly on our circumstances and the physical things around us, the result is often strife, worry and fear. But life lived according to the Spirit is marked by love, joy and peace. That is the far better way to live, and it is available to her even in this difficult season.
It may help her to know that many young people find the first year away at college harder than they expected. Even when they hope everyone around them will be supportive and like minded, they often face disappointment, misunderstanding and even ridicule, and they have to learn how to navigate difficult living situations with suitemates and teammates. That does not mean she has failed or that God has left her. God often uses that very challenge to teach us to be compassionate, understanding, forgiving and loving, and to grow stronger in our walk with Him. Building a true sense of belonging takes time, and it is normal for it to feel uncomfortable at first.
When anxiety rises, the Psalms give us a pattern to follow. David asked his own soul, why are you cast down, why are you so disturbed within me, and then he answered himself, hope in God. Often the reason we feel so cast down is that we have, without realizing it, taken God out of the equation and are trying to carry everything ourselves. The answer is to put Him back in, to factor Him into every situation. When we hope in God again, what felt impossible begins to have a solution, because He is present and He is able.
For your daughter, that means learning to recognize when she feels overwhelmed and is tempted to push loved ones away, and instead turning to the Lord and to the wise, caring people He has placed around her. Pray that she will not make quick decisions from fear or from being overwhelmed, but will allow herself time to adjust and will seek clarity with a calm and clear mind. Pray that she will value those who truly love her and want what is best for her, and that she will have the courage to ask for support when she needs it.
Regarding her boyfriend, pray that God will give her wisdom and clarity and help her to honor Him in that relationship. Distance and change can reveal a lot, and she needs discernment to see what is healthy and what is not, to act with purity and truth, and to seek the Lord's will above her own feelings. Pray that she will not be driven by fear or loneliness, but will make choices that reflect God's design for love and commitment and that lead to peace.
We join you in praying for her confidence, peace, wisdom and strength. We pray that she will know she is never alone, that God is with her in her dorm, on her team, in her classes and in every lonely moment, that He will give her success in her studies and athletics as she does her best, and that He will provide genuine friendships and a place of belonging. May she experience the peace and joy that come from walking by the Spirit, and may she learn day by day to hope in God.
